Winter Hawks Introduce Director of Player Personnel
Created: Dec 3, 2007
Portland-area hockey coach and current Winter Hawks Scout, Matt Bardsley, has been introduced as the team's new Director of Player Personnel.

"We are extremely excited about Matt stepping up into a new role for us, said team President, Jack Donovan. "Having a local Director of Player Development will refine our scouting capabilities. Having the player information superhighway in the office everyday can only be a plus as we move toward our bantam and European drafts."

Bardsley will oversee all Winter Hawks scouting operations across the United States, Canada and Europe.

"As a longtime fan and season ticket holder, it is a tremendous honor to be hired into this position," said Bardsley. "We have a good nucleus of players on the roster and a solid group of coming in from last season's draft. It is my job to back up that group with an excellent crop of players in this coming draft and that is what I intend to do."

During his eight-year tenure as Area Scout, Bardsley was influential in scouting and recruiting recent Winter Hawks stars and current National Hockey League players, Brandon Dubinsky (New York Rangers) and Beaverton's own Paul Gaustad (Buffalo Sabres). Current Winter Hawks players, Chris Francis and Salem's Aaron McGill were both discovered by Bardsley.

Bardsley's involvement as a coach, instructor and evaluator at the highest levels of youth hockey have turned Winter Hawks players from Alaska (Dubinsky), Oregon (Gaustad and Aaron McGill), California (Cameron Cepek, now with the Edmonton Oilkings), and Nevada (Chris Francis).

Hockey Coach and Instructor career highlights:

- The only Portland Junior Hawks Association coach in the past decade to lead the U-16 team to the Pacific Regional District Tournament Championship game.

- Appearances in international tournaments in both Japan and Canada.

- Teaches at various hockey schools including the Bob Johnson Hockey Academy in Aspen, Colorado, U.S. Junior Development Program in Bolder, Colorado and the Okanogan Hockey School in Penticton, British Colombia.
