The Vancouver Giants congratulate defenceman Jonathon Blum on being named to the United States World Junior Hockey Team. Blum is the only player from the Western Hockey League to appear on Team USA this year.

Blum is into his third season with the Giants. The 18 year-old from Rancho Santa Margarita, California is currently leading all WHL defencemen in scoring through his first 31 games (7g,26a=33pts.).

“Jonathon has proven himself to be on the best defencemen in his age category in North America the past few seasons,” says Giants General Manager Scott Bonner. “We know Jonathon will become a better player by taking part in this tournament and we wish him the best of luck representing his country.”

This past summer, Blum was selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators (23rd overall). He won a silver medal for the United States at the 2006 Under 18 Junior World Cup.

Blum will leave for Team USA’s pre-tournament training in Ann Arbour, Michigan December 16. This year’s World Junior Championships are being held in the Czech Republic December 26 to January 5.

Blum becomes the 7th player in Giants history to represent his country at the World Junior Championships. Last year, defenceman Cody Franson and forward Kenndal McArdle won a gold medal for Team Canada. Current Giants forwards Michal Repik (Czech Republic) and Mario Bliznak (Slovakia) also participated in last year’s tournament. In 2005, goaltender Marek Schwarz (Czech Republic) and defenceman Andrej Meszaros (Slovakia) skated for their countries at the same event. Current Giants goalie Tyson Sexsmith will attempt to make Team Canada when he takes part in Hockey Canada's National Team Selection Camp later this month in Calgary, Alberta.

Congrats Jon, well done. Have a great tournament.
