Washington Capitals’ first round draft choice Eric Fehr and Pittsburgh Penguins’ second round draft choice Ryan Stone were the big winners Sunday night as the Wheat Kings brought the curtain down on the 2004-05 Western Hockey League regular season with their annual awards banquet held at the Keystone Centre’s Convention Hall.

In addition to being named co-winners of the Meighen Haddad Most Valuable Player Trophy, Fehr captured the Brandon Sun Trophy for leading the club in scoring this past season with 59 goals and 111 points. In fact, he became the first Brandon player to capture the league scoring title since Ray Ferraro in 1983-84. As well, the 19-year old Winkler product took home the Molson Cup as well as the Manitoba Hydro Turk Broda Memorial Trophy for being chosen the Western Hockey League club’s Top Manitoba Born Player. This is the third straight season that Fehr has won the Turk Broda Trophy.

Stone meanwhile also took home the Coca Cola Bottling Ollie Stark Trophy for being chosen the team’s Most Inspirational Player, the Tri-Star Screenprinting Hardest Working Player as well as the Capitol Theatre Most Popular Player honours. This marks the second straight season that Stone has been selected the hockey club’s Hardest Working and Most Inspirational Player.

Stone finished second in the WHL scoring race this past season 33 goals and 99 points.

Captain Tim Konsorada, who finished in a tie with Vancouver’s Gilbert Brule for third in the WHL scoring race with 87 points, and 18-year old defenceman Stephane Lenoski were the only other two multiple winners on Sunday.

While Lenoski was named the team’s Scholastic Player of the Year and winner of the Dennis Truscott UCT Most Improved Player, Konsorada won the Simplot Canada John Scott Kent Most Sportsmanlike Player as well as the Art Marshall Trophy for being chosen the Wheat Kings’ Top Graduating Player.

Other winners Sunday night were defenceman Jon Webb (McDonalds Frank King Trophy; Most Community Minded), netminder Tyler Plante (CKX Television Rookie of the Year) and former Saskatoon Blade Steven Later (Wheat Kings’ Executive Top Defenceman), who finished second in scoring among WHL defenceman with fourteen goals and 63 points. Plante led all WHL rookies with 34 wins, a 2.58 goals against average and a stellar .907 save percentage.
