The 2007-08 Western Hockey League season is at the midway point with teams having played roughly half of their regular season schedules, and it's time to take a look at how the season has shaped up so far.

Here's a team-by-team look at the Eastern Conference through the first half of the 2007-08 WHL season:

EASTERN CONFERENCE

East Division

Brandon Wheat Kings

2007-08 record: 34gp 23-10-0-1, 47pts (1st in Div., 2nd in Conf.) GF: 134 GA: 91
Top Scorers:
Tyler Dittmer 34gp-25g-17a-42pts
Andrew Clark 30gp-11g-28a-39pts
Matt Lowry 34gp-16g-21a-37pts

The Wheat Kings enjoyed a very solid first half of the 2007-08 WHL season, and find themselves in the East Division driver’s seat at the Christmas break. After posting an average 7-6-0-1 record through their first 14 games, the Wheaties have stormed to a 16-4 record since, and haven’t lost back-to-back games since dropping five straight from October 19th-26th. A big reason for the Wheat Kings’ strong record is their top-ranked offense, which has produced a WHL-best 134 goals. Led offensively by veterans Tyler Dittmer, Andrew Clark and Matt Lowry, the Wheat Kings have also received a surprising amount of scoring from the rookie trio of Brayden Schenn, Scott Glennie and Matt Calvert. Schenn, 16, leads all WHL rookies in scoring with 34 points this season, while Glennie, also 16, ranks third among WHL freshmen with 13 goals. The Wheat Kings’ defense has also been equally tough, allowing the third-fewest goals in the Eastern Conference, thanks in large part to the fourth-best penalty-killing unit in the League. Sophomore goaltender Joe Caligiuri has proved a worthy successor to former Wheaties’ starting netminder Tyler Plante, while rookie Andrew Hayes has posted five wins and two shutouts in nine appearances this season.

Moose Jaw Warriors

2007-08 record: 34gp 18-9-4-3, 43pts (3rd in Div., 7th in Conf.) GF: 105 GA: 92
Top Scorers:
Jordan Knackstedt 34gp-18g-26a-44pts
Jason Bast 34pg-14g-26a-40pts
Joel Broda 36gp-16g-12a-28pts

The Warriors have enjoyed a successful, if inconsistent first half of the 2007-08 season, losing and winning in large stretches. After losing their first five games of the season, the Warriors would go on to win nine of their next 11. A seven-game losing streak through most of November set them back in the East Division and Eastern Conference races. However, another stretch of nine wins in 11 games leading up to the Christmas break have the Warriors back in the log jammed upper half of the Eastern Conference. Player movement has also been a story for the Warriors through the first half of the season, with five new faces in the lineup since the start of the season. Up front, Jordan Knackstedt and Jason Bast have been consistent offensive producers, with Joel Broda Frazer McLaren and, when healthy, Riley Holzapfel chipping in extra scoring. The addition of NHL first-rounder Keaton Ellerby has strengthened a defense corps that hasn’t conceded more than two goals in a game since mid November. Veteran goaltender Joey Perricone has been strong and steady for the most part, posting a career-best three shutouts and a .918 save percentage through the first half of the season.

Prince Albert Raiders

2007-08 record: 36gp 11-20-3-2, 27pts (5th in Div., 10th in Conf.) GF: 91 GA: 115
Top Scorers:
Ryan McDonald 36gp-15g-15a-30pts
Matt Robertson 36gp-15g-12a-27pts
Justin Bernhardt 31gp-13g-11a-24pts

The Raiders have had a trying first half of the 2007-08 WHL season and, with 14 points currently separating them and Swift Current for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, have a deep hole to dig themselves out of if they want to see post-season hockey. Consistency has been an issue for the Raiders as the team has only twice this season recorded back-to-back wins, while suffering losing streaks of five or more games on two occasions. The inability to win on home ice has also been a problem for the Raiders, who have picked up just four victories at the Art Hauser Centre this season. Matt Robertson and Ryan McDonald have carried much of the offense for the Raiders, with both players on pace for 30 goals, while the addition of Justin Bernhardt has also helped boost the scoring output. Defensively, the Raiders have conceded the third-most goals in the Eastern Conference, and have just two defensemen with positive +/- figures. Veteran goaltender Dustin Butler has enjoyed terrific outings but has struggled at times, while rookie Steven Stanford has shown great potential. Injuries have also played a role for the Raiders with top defenseman Jeff May and key offensive forward Andy Smith both missing significant time.

Regina Pats

2007-08 record: 38gp 22-14-1-1, 46pts (2nd in Div., 4th in Conf.) GF: 113 GA: 113
Top Scorers:
Jordan Eberle 36gp-24g-15a-39pts
Tim Kraus 38gp-7g-29a-36pts
Logan Pyett 35gp-14g-16a-30pts

The Pats may be slightly disappointed in the first half of their season, considering the high expectations pinned on them coming into the season. However, with 46 points through 38 games, the team is still right in the thick of the Eastern Conference race. Always strong at home, the Pats have again been a force when playing in Regina, posting a 14-4-0-1 record at the Brandt Centre. Owning the WHL’s top power play has also helped the Pats keep themselves at or near the top of the East Division all season. However, inconsistency has kept the Pats from reaching their potential, considering they’ve lost six times to teams currently ranked in the bottom five in the WHL. Offensively, Jordan Eberle, Tim Kraus, and Michael MacAngus have led the way up front. Eberle, who is draft-eligible this season, ranks fourth in the WHL in goals and tied for third in power play goals. Rearguards Logan Pyett, Nick Ross, and Juraj Valach have also added much to the offense, combining for 24 goals and 77 points. Defensively, the Pats have been average, allowing an equal number of goals as they’ve scored. Neither Linden Rowat nor rookie Jeff Bosch is among the WHL’s top 15 goaltenders in either goals-against average or save percentage.

Saskatoon Blades

2007-08 record: 34gp 12-20-2-0, 26pts (6th in Div., 11th in Conf.) GF: 78 GA: 114
Top Scorers:
Ondrej Fiala 30gp-8g-17a-25pts
Stefan Elliott 34gp-7g-16a-23pts
Derek Hulak 34gp-7g-13a-20pts

The Blades have struggled through the first half of the 2007-08 WHL season, and currently find themselves 15 points behind in the race for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. One of the big factors in the Blades’ struggles has been their inability to win on the road, having posted just two victories away from home in the season’s first half. As it was last season, offensive production has been an issue for the Blades through the first half of this season. The team has tallied an Eastern Conference-low 78 goals, and only one player – Colton Gillies - has topped the 10-goal plateau. Ondrej Fiala, acquired from Everett early in the season, has been consistent offensively, averaging almost a point per game. Injuries to Fiala, veterans Chris Durand and Justin McCrae, and offensive rearguard Jyri Niemi, though, have taken their toll on the Blades in the scoring department. On the bright side, the play of 16-year-old rookie defenseman Stefan Elliott, particularly offensively, has been tremendous as he currently ranks second on the Blades with 23 points. Braden Holtby has performed admirably in the Blades’ net, posting a respectable .907 save percentage while facing the second-most shots of any goalie.

Swift Current Broncos

2007-08 record: 37gp 18-14-0-5, 41pts (4th in Div., 8th in Conf.) GF: 122 GA: 111
Top Scorers:
Zack Smith 37gp-12g-241a-36pts
Erik Felde 37gp-18g-17a-35pts
Michael Wilson 37gp-3g-30a-33pts

The Broncos have enjoyed modest success through the 2007-08 season’s first half, and currently find themselves comfortably in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and only six points out of the East Division lead. What’s more is that they’ve managed to post an above-.500 record despite playing 22 of their first 37 games on the road. Offensively, the Broncos have not had issues scoring, having potted the sixth-most goals in the League, and the second-most in the Eastern Conference. With six players with 10 or more goals and eight players with 20 or more points, the Broncos boast one of the most balanced attacks in the WHL. On the back end, Michael Wilson and Eric Doyle are both among the top six WHL defensemen in scoring while Wilson ranks fifth in the WHL with a +21 rating. However, the rest of the Broncos’ defense is a combined -12. Goaltender Travis Yonkman finds himself among the WHL’s top 15 in both save percentage and goals-against average since assuming the number one role this season following the graduation of longtime starter Kyle Moir. However, Yonkman has also lost five of six shootout games in which he’s been involved.

Calgary Hitmen

2007-08 record: 37gp 23-11-1-2, 49pts (1st in Div., 1st in Conf.) GF: 118 GA: 89
Top Scorers:
Ryan White 33gp-15g-18a-33pts
Kyle Bortis 35gp-18g-14a-32pts
T.J. Galiardi 37gp-8g-22a-30pts

The Hitmen are enjoying another solid campaign in 2007-08, and have managed to keep pace in the strongest division in the WHL. Up front, veterans Ryan White, Kyle Bortis, Ian Duval and Carson McMillan have led the offense. Bortis has scored 32 points in 33 games since coming to the Hitmen from Swift Current. 19-year-old rookie T.J. Galiardi and 17-year-old freshman Brandon Kozun have added even more scoring punch. Galiardi, who played in the NCAA last season, currently ranks third among WHL rookies with 30 points this season while 17-year-old Kozun ranks 13th with 19 points this season. Defensively, there hasn’t been a stingier team in the Eastern Conference than the Hitmen, who have surrendered a conference-low 89 goals. Led by Karl Alzner, the Hitmen defense corps is a combined +33 this season, with only rookie Keith Seabrook currently on the negative side in plus/minus. The Hitmen’s defense has also produced 20 goals this season. Dan Spence and Martin Jones have both performed well in the Hitmen net this season. Both have more than 10 wins, and both sit among the top 10 WHL goaltenders in goals-against average.

Edmonton Oil Kings

2007-08 record: 36gp 12-18-2-4, 30pts (5th in Div., 9th in Conf.) GF: 91 GA: 129
Top Scorers:
Robin Figren 26gp-13g-12a-25pts
Brett Breitkreuz 36gp-11g-12a-23pts
Tomas Vincour 36gp-10g-12a-22pts

The Oil Kings began their inaugural WHL season with two straight wins and four victories in their first even games. However, the expansion squad has come back to earth since their strong start. With an 11-point gap between them and Swift Current for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the Oil Kings will have their work cut out for them to battle their way into the post-season picture in the second half of the season. On top of that, they play in a division where the top four teams have already posted 20 or more victories. If they were in the Western Conference, they’d be just four points out of a playoff spot. Scoring goals has been a challenge for the Oil Kings, although they have managed to spread the offensive load throughout their line-up. Robin Figren has 25 points in 26 games to lead the way. Rookie Tomas Vincour, the top pick at the 2007 CHL Import draft, has 12 points in his last 11 games after a slow start to his WHL career. Defensively, the Oil Kings have struggled, allowing the most goals in the Eastern Conference. No Oil Kings player currently has a positive plus/minus, while top defensemen Cameron Cepek and Bretton Stamler are a combined -29 this season. Veteran netminder Alex Archibald has performed admirably for the most part, posting a solid .905 save percentage despite facing more shots than any other WHL goaltender.

Kootenay Ice

2007-08 record: 36gp 21-12-3-0, 45pts (3rd in Div., 5th in Conf.) GF: 111 GA: 99
Top Scorers:
Steve DaSilva 35gp-23g-24a-47pts
Andrew Bailey 36gp-15g-21a-36pts
John Negrin 35gp-1g-30a-31pts

The Kootenay Ice may have gotten off to a horrendous start to the 2007-08 season, but they have since completely turned their fortunes around to become one of the top teams in the WHL over the last two months. On Halloween, the Ice had a 7-10-2-0 record and were well off the pace the Central Division and Eastern Conference leaders. Since October 31st, though, Kootenay has posted a 14-2-1-0 record and climbed to within striking distance of the Eastern Conference lead. Great improvements in all areas of their play have helped the Ice turn their season around. Steve DaSilva, the WHL’s second-leading scorer last year, has been an offensive dynamo since mid October, having been held off the score sheet just twice since October 20th, while Andrew Bailey, Dustin Sylvester, Michael Stickland and Arnaud Jacquemet have also been consistent in the offensive zone. Defensemen John Negrin and Chad Greenan have both contributed offensively and helped the Ice shore up their defensive game. Negrin sits tied for first among WHL defensemen with 30 assists this season, and also boasts a solid +11 rating. Starting goaltender Kris Lazaruk endured a tough start to the season, but has rebounded by posting a 9-2 record with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage in his last 12 appearances. Rookie netminder Thomas Heemskerk has been terrific in his first WHL campaign, and currently leads or ranks among the top three rookie netminders in goals-against average, save percentage and wins.

Lethbridge Hurricanes

2007-08 record: 37gp 23-12-1-1, 48pts (2nd in Div., 3rd in Conf.) GF: 117 GA: 97
Top Scorers:
Mitch Fadden 37gp-19g-26a-45pts
Zach Boychuk 34gp-16g-18a-34pts
Dwight King 37gp-16g-14a-30pts

The Hurricanes are right where many people though they’d be at this point in the season – competing for first place in the Central Division and Eastern Conference. After a sluggish start to the season – four wins from their first 12 games – the Hurricanes have been one of the strongest teams in the Conference, if not the League, having posted a 19-5-0-1 record since October 19th. Offensively, the ‘Canes have been led by scoring stars Mitch Fadden and Zach Boychuk, who are both averaging at least a point per game. Dwight King, Carter Bancks, Adam Chorneyko, Mike Wuchterl and rookie Cam Braes have also chipped in offensively, while the acquisition of Dallas Stars prospect Colton Sceviour from Portland in November added another offensive weapon to the fold. Defensively, the ‘Canes are much improved from last season. Jesse Craige, rookie Luca Sbisa and veteran Ben Wright have all chipped in offensively while posting a combined +26 rating. Michael Maniago and Juha Metsola both rank among the WHL’s top 10 in goals-against average, but neither has a save percentage over 90%.

Medicine Hat Tigers

2007-08 record: 37gp 20-13-3-1, 44pts (4th in Div., 6th in Conf.) GF: 102 GA: 97
Top Scorers:
Tyler Ennis 37gp-22g-23a-45pts
Daine Todd 35gp-11g-21a-32pts
Brennan Bosch 37gp-5g-22a-27pts

The defending WHL Champion Tigers may not be the same dominant force they were last season or the year before, but they are still proving to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, and are right in the thick of the race for first place in the Conference. Up front, the speedy Tigers have been led by Tyler Ennis who, along with veterans Daine Todd and Brennan Bosch, has assumed a large portion of the offensive responsibility. Veteran forward Yashar Farmanara has been a strong contributor offensively, as have rookie Sean Ringrose and Wacey Hamilton. Defensively, the Tigers may miss the presence of All-Star rearguard Kris Russell, particularly on the power play which currently ranks 19th in the WHL. Veterans Mark Isherwood, Trevor Glass, and Jordan Bendfeld have all stepped up their responsibilities, chipping in offensively and staying strong defensively. 16-year-old Rookie Cody Carlson has been strong on the blue line, contributing nine points while leading the Tigers’ defense corps with a +6 rating. Goaltenders Ryan Holfeld and Tomas Vosvrda have shared netminding duties for the Tigers. Holfeld, who backed up Matt Keetley last season, currently ranks eighth among WHL goaltender with a 2.43 GAA.

Red Deer Rebels

2007-08 record: 38gp 10-23-4-1, 25pts (6th in Div., 12th in Conf.) GF: 81 GA: 121
Top Scorers:
Brandon Sutter 33gp-12g-13a-25pts
Scott Doucet 38gp-9g-9a-18pts
Cullen Morin 38gp-1g-17a-18pts

A young Rebels team has struggled through the first half of the 2007-08 season, and currently find themselves in 12th place in the Eastern Conference and 16 points out of a playoff spot. Losing 15 games by a single goal hasn’t helped the Rebels’ cause, while winning only four times on home ice has also set them back. The biggest concern for the Rebels is their inability to generate offense. The team has scored only 81 goals this season, despite playing the most games of any team in the Eastern Conference. Only one Rebel – Brandon Sutter – has more than 10 goals and 20 points, while only three others have more than five goals. On a bright note, 16-year-old rookie Landon Ferraro has established himself as a key player this season, and has shown potential to become a scoring star in the future. In addition, the Rebels have struggled on the power play this season, and currently own the 20th ranked power play unit in the WHL. The team has struggled defensively as well, allowing 121 goals – the second-most in the conference. Cullen Morin, Luke Egener and Mark Louis, the Rebels’ top three defensemen, are a combined -42 this season. Goaltender James Reimer has performed valiantly for the Rebels, posting a very respectable 2.51 goals-against average and an excellent .917 save percentage while facing an average of over 27 shots per game.
