Penalty Numbers...
As we have reached the unofficial first half the season, I thought it would be interesting to see how the penalty calls compare to last season.
From first review, the total penalty calls per team is down by just over one call per game - 9.14/game in 06/07 vs. 8.11/game in 07/08 - a difference of 1.04. In accordance, the power play numbers per game for each team are down as well - 6.71/game in 06/07 vs. 5.47/game in 07/08 - a greater difference of 1.24.
The optimist will say, "wow, look at how the teams have adjusted to the new rule standards", while the pessimist will say, "wow, the referees are back to not calling the rules as per the new standards".
I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle...as it usually does.
