With goaltender Dwayne Roloson sidelined due to the flu, the Edmonton Oilers have signed University of Alberta Golden Bears goaltender Aaron Sorochan to an NHL amateur try-out agreement.

The 6'0'', 180-pound native of Edmonton will dress as back-up to Mathieu Garon for tonight's Oilers game versus the New Jersey Devils at Rexall Place.

Sorochan is currently in his third season with the Golden Bears and has backstopped Alberta to an 11-3-0 record and first place in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association standings this season. In 13 conference games, Sorochan has compiled a 10-2-0 record with a 2.50 goals-against average, a .902 save percentage and one shutout. His 10 wins leads the conference and he is second in goals-against average. Overall, the 23-year-old netminder is 12-2-1 with a 2.44 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 17 games.

Since joining the Golden Bears in 2005-06, Sorochan has played 80 games and has a 59-17-2 (.769) record with a 2.33 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.

It was Friday afternoon and Aaron Sorochan, a goalie with the University of Alberta, was headed to an Edmonton hockey rink. Then he got a phone call and plans sort of changed. He was still headed to the rink only it wasn't Millwoods arena but instead Rexall Place.

You see, the Edmonton Oilers were in a bind. They had a game against New Jersey but only had one healthy goalie and that was Mathieu Garon. Dwayne Roloson was sick with strep throat. He didn't sleep a wink on Thursday night and as Friday went along he got worse instead of better.

The Oilers have goalies in their minor league system but Springfield was playing in San Antonio. Stockton was home but both were too far away to get a netminder to the game in time. The Oilers needed to find the best local goalie available...in comes Aaron Sorochan.

He's 23, has a 10-2 record this year and is an All-Canadian. Not exactly a slouch and also someone the Oilers were familiar with, having invited him to camp a few years ago. It may have taken him a while but he finally made the team.

Sorochan didn't get in the game, and didn't even earn a penny for his one night of NHL work. In order to keep his eligibility at the U of A, Sorochan signed a 24-hour amateur tryout contract.

Now this kid has a history with the Oilers, but it's as a fan. Born in Edmonton, he was a fan from birth. He was one month old in May of 1984 when mom Arlene and dad Mike had Aaron with them at then Northlands Coliseum. He witnessed Edmonton's first Stanley Cup.

He doesn't remember that night but he won't ever forget Friday. The night Aaron Sorochan was an Edmonton Oiler.

If they saw any other goaltenders in action, Roloson might find himself out of a job. haha
