Brandon, Manitoba – For the second time this season, one of Brandon’s highly touted rookies has been chosen the Tip Top Tailors’ Wheat King Player of the Month for December.

18-year old Matt Calvert joins veteran Tyler Dittmer (October) and 16-year old rookie Brayden Schenn (November) as this year’s recipients during the first three months of the 2007-2008 Western Hockey League regular season.

In helping to lead Brandon to seven victories in ten December starts last month, not to mention first place in the WHL’s Eastern Division, the 5’9” 172 lb local product scored seven goals and 6 assists for 13 points. As well as scoring at least a point in eight of 10 games, he finished the month with an impressive +8 ranking.

After scoring 28 goals and 83 points in thirty regular season games for the AAA midget Wheat Kings last season, Calvert enters Friday night’s game against the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes with twelve goals, 32 points and an impressive +15 ranking this year.

Calvert is currently fifth in team scoring and fourth among all first year players in the WHL. Only Schenn (34), Jamie Benn of Kelowna (36) and Calgary’s T.J. Galiardi (37) have scored more points this season.

Winners of six of their last seven road games, Calvert and the Wheat Kings return to the friendly confines of Westman Communications Group Place this weekend for games Friday against Lethbridge and Sunday night against Prince Albert. Brandon is currently 2-2-0 since Christmas and begins the weekend with a record of 25-12-0-1, good for 51 points and a first place tie with the Regina Pats.

Brandon continues to play without six of its regulars due to injury and two prestigious International Tournaments. While 19-year old left-winger Daniel Bartek (Czech Republic) is attending the World Junior Hockey Championships, Schenn, Scott Glennie and Brodie Melnychuk are representing the Wheat Kings at the World Under 17 Tournament in London, Ontario as members of Team Western.

In that game, Team Western dropped a 4-3 decision to Ontario in one of two Semi-Finals scheduled for Thursday. Melnychuk had an assist in a losing cause.

Tickets to Friday’s game, which will feature the club’s annual Family Skate, sponsored by 101.1 FM The Farm and The Home Depot, are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

In recognition of the monthly honour, Calvert will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Tip Top Tailors in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings during the club’s game against Swift Current on Friday, January 11th.

Ill tell you, whichever NHL team takes him in the draft will be surprised of how good of an all around player he is. He is definitely overshadowed by Schenn and Glennie, rightfully so...hes excellent offensively and defensively and is good on the PK.
