Tribe comes up short against strong Tri-City club

MATTHEW GOURLIE
The Moose Jaw Times Herald

The Moose Jaw Warriors played well enough to give themselves a chance to win Wednesday against the Tri-City Americans.
But to beat the No. 4 team in the Canadian Hockey League, the Warriors needed to be at their best.
The Warriors give themselves a chance to win in the third period, but never recovered from a slow start in a 3-2 to the Americans.
The Warriors are now 2-2 on their U.S. Division road trip and 20-11-4-3 overall. They will face Spokane Friday and Kootenay Saturday to end the six-game swing.
“I didn’t like our start at all,” said Warriors head coach Dave Hunchak. “We sat back and watched them dictate the pace at times and weren’t able to get our game going.”
The Americans came out and grabbed a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes out-shooting the Tribe 9-2 in the frame. Hunchak felt that the Ams deserved a lot of credit for putting the Warriors off of their game.
“They did a really good job with their gap control and we couldn’t get pucks deep to get any forecheck going. It’s tough to get any momentum or any shots when you’re constantly trying to defend the transition game,” said Hunchak.
“They’re a difficult team to play against.”
The Americans 19-2 record at home is the WHL’s best.
Despite being in a hole, the Warriors tried to battle back.
Joel Broda sparked the Warriors in his return to Kennewick as he scored a short-handed goal to cut the Americans lead to 2-1. Colton Yellow Horn’s second power-play goal of the night put the Ams up 3-1, but Frazer McLaren replied less than a minute later to keep the pressure on the home team.
The Warriors earned a late power-play with 1:28 left, but failed to test Americans goalie Chet Pickard.
“That part of the game was good,” said Hunchak. “We had a power-play at the end . . . and the name of the game tonight was turnovers and we turned one over in the offensive zone and that was the end of the game.”
The Ams were 2-for-6 on the power-play, while the Warriors were 0-for-5.
“Their power-play was the difference tonight,” said Hunchak. “Their special teams were better than ours.”
While the Warriors had some positives to take away from their battle with the Americans (28-8-1-0), Hunchak felt they had a chance to pick up points and let it get away.
“To a man I think our guys would admit that we didn’t play our best game and we still had a chance to win late into the game,” said Hunchak. “In itself it’s good to see that, but if you look at the overall picture we’re disappointed with our start and I think we have guys in the room tonight who had a bit more to give and didn’t.”
Joey Perricone made 20 saves for the Warriors, while Pickard stopped 17 shots. Shaun Vey also scored for the Americans, while former Warrior Jason Reese picked up his 100th career WHL assist.
Warriors centre Brad Riege was back in the lineup after serving a one-game suspension for a match penalty against Everett.
