The Medicine Hat Tigers ensured their second trip this season to Edmonton was a memorable one.
Locked in a 2-2 draw with the expansion Oil Kings at Rexall Place, left-winger Tyler Ennis, who is a product from the Alberta capital, scored the only goal in the shootout to deliver his squad a 3-2 victory before 4,279 fans.
“Tyler’s goal to win it for us was really nice,” said Tigers associate coach Shaun Clouston over the phone from Edmonton. “It was a big goal for the team and a big goal for him.
“We have a really good following up here. There are a lot of guys from this area. There were a big group of Tiger fans here tonight.”
The win improves the team’s record to 23-13-3-1, and temporarily lifted them to third place in the WHL’s Central Division with 50 points.
The idle Kootenay Ice (23-13-3) sit a point back of the Tigers. The Oil Kings, who are fifth in the division, see their record move to 14-19-2-5.
Edmonton drew first blood just 53 seconds into Wednesday’s contest. Czech right-winger Tomas Vincour ended up ripping home his 11th of the year to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead.
“After they scored their power-play goal really early in the game, I thought we responded and played a solid game,” said Clouston.
Medicine Hat took a 2-1 lead on goals by Daine Todd and Jordan Hickmott in the second period. Brennan Bosch drew assists on both markers. Todd’s marker was his 15th of the year an a new career high for the overager.
Brenden Dowd tied the game 2-2 with 1:50 to play in the second period.
The Tigers controlled play in the third, outshooting Edmonton 12-5. In overtime, each team netted one shot on goal.
Goaltender Ryan Holfeld made 26 saves in regulation and overtime to earn the win for the Tigers. Overager Alex Archibald made 40 stops through 65 minutes before suffering the shootout loss for Edmonton.
NOTES — The Tigers’ road game Friday against the Blades in Saskatoon will be shown live on Shaw at 6 p.m.
The Tigers have confirmed that Bosch’s four-goal game last Friday in a 6-5 victory over the Broncos in Swift Current was the first time a player scored four goals in a game under Desjardins. Current Philadelphia Flyer Joffery Lupul was the last Tiger to net four markers in a game, and he did that twice in the 2001-02 season.
The Tigers have won all four meeting against Edmonton this season. Wednesday’s match was only the second time this season the Tigers have played in a shootout. They suffered a 3-2 shootout loss on home ice Dec. 2 to the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Medicine Hat finishes its three-game road trip Saturday by traveling to Prince Albert to face the Raiders. That will end a stretch were the Tigers play 11 of 12 games away from The Arena.
Wednesday’s game also saw Tigers head coach and general manager Willie Desjardins guide the club as bench boss for the 400th regular season game.
