Listened to this one on the radio feed, sounded like a decent tilt and I was surprised at some of the stops it sounded like Barnstable made. Still doesn't change my mind about our need for veterean back-up, but I feel a bit less trepidacious about him.

Vancouver 2 Seattle 1

Rookie back-up Kraymer Barnstable put together an excellent road game turning away 34 of 35 shots to get his team a hard won victory. The Key Arena is tough place for teams to get wins this season as the Seattle squad are 11-3 in regulation on home ice. The Giants usually have a battle there and tonight was no exception. The home squad peppered the net in the third getting only one past Barnstable on the PP off of a rebound. The Giants remain tied for top spot in the dub with the victory, with Spokane who shut-out the Americans tonight. The Giants opened the scoring in the first period on the PP. Spencer Machacek got the puck to Mario Bliznak who fed James Wright on the doorstep. Wright slipped the puck past Jacob Deserres who was very solid again tonight. The first ended with fight and coach Rob Sumner being ejected from the game for coming onto to the ice to challenge the officials. Chris Cloud dropped the gloves with Sena Acolatse with six seconds left in the opening frame. At the buzzer, Benn Olson was being called for a high-stick and then Mike Berube and Greg Scott tried to have a fight after the period had ended, but were stopped by the linesmen and given unsportsmanlike penalties.

The Giants opened the second period with a 5 on 3 advantage, but despite some good puck movement were unable to get the puck past Deserres. Just after the two-man advantage, however, Evander Kane - fresh from doing everything for team Pacific at the U17 tournament and just missing out on getting a medal, proved his worth to the Giants. Stripping the puck he took a long wrister beating Deserres high, giving his WHL team a two goal lead off his unassisted tally, one which they would need. Vancouver took the rest of the penalties assessed in the game in the second and third periods, which amounted to only three penalties, but seemed a bit lop-sided considering the style of play. The T-Birds elevated their level of play in the third period with David Richard managing to finally get one past Barnstable on the PP. The Seattle squad kept up the pressure, pulling their goalie with a bit over a minute left, but were unable to solve the rookie net-minder who put in his best start of the season – earning first star honours in the process.

The Giants barely out-shot the T-Birds 38-35 tonight and each squad had one goal on the man-advantage with the home team going 1 for 3 and the visitors going 1 for 4. Kraymer Barnstable improved his record to 2-2 putting together a complete game making some tricky pad stops and managing to direct rebounds away from danger. Kane, after scoring 4 goals and getting 6 assists in six games playing for the Pacific squad at the U17 World Juniors in London Ontario, got the game winner shoring up a line which missed him during his absence. CPZ and Garry Nunn were both well into the minus column without the rookie playing beside them, but sounded like they were back in form tonight.

The Giants have one more game this weekend as they take on the new-look Kamloops Blazers who dealt a few veterans for some promising youngsters and some future bantam picks recently and could either be a mess or a revitalized squad with all the new blood, but most likely a combination there-of. They will be at the tail-end of three in three like the Giants will, but unlike the Giants they had their heads handed to them tonight losing 6-1 to the surging Kelowna Rockets. The Giants will still need to keep their focus as they take on the Blazers tomorrow afternoon. A very slim possibility exists that Jonathon Blum will be back for the game, but its unlikely as he’ll be jet-lagged and looking to take a bit of rest before the Giants extended Eastern road swing. The puck drops at the Coliseum at 5:00pm PST.

Three Stars

1. Kraymer Barnstable
2. Jacob Deserres
3. Brent Regner *

* the official sheet has Kraymer Barnstable twice, apparently he was that good ;) – but I seem to recall Joey mentioning Regner as the real third star in his post-game show.
