Watching the tape delay of the Blades @ Rebels. First time I have seen Niemi. What a cannon he has! The opening goal was awsome.

Will be fun to watch him in the Top Prospects Game on Team Red with James Wright.

Niemi Wins Hardest Shot Competition

Blades defenseman Jyri Niemi took part in the 2008 CHL Top Prospects Game Skills Competition on Tuesday night in Edmonton, AB, and won the hardest shot competition with a 97 mile per hour blast.
Niemi, who has scored 9 goals for the Blades in his rookie season, did not take long to earn respect around the Western Hockey League as having one of the hardest slap shots and has become a staple on the Blades blue line during power play opportunities. The 17 year old import player is from Hameenkyro, Finland.

Saskatoon’s own Luke Schenn (Kel) and A.J. Jenks (Ply) of the QMJHL were runners up to Niemi with 94mph shots.

The Home Hardware Top Prospects game will take place on Wednesday night beginning at 8:00pm local time and can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet. Nine of the top ten North American prospects will be taking part in this year’s game while former top prospect participants include Roberto Luongo, Dion Phaneuf, Eric Staal, and Joe Thornton.
