Deadline Day in the WHL

The Moose Jaw Warriors made sure to get their deals done early this year, so when the clock struck 4:00 Thursday afternoon, it was a new hour like any other. No players were moved, no good-byes were said. Moose Jaw’s GM Chad Lang;

"We started the day pretty comfortable with our situation with our hockey club … but at the same time we were willing to listen to clubs. You know, the day started off slow but, roughly around noon things started to heat, but the end result, you know, we weren’t willing to blow up our roster to tweak things and at the same time we weren’t willing to sell the future for players who were basically three-month rentals."

A couple days before the deadline the Warriors made a move that saw the league’s top scoring defenseman, Ty Wishart come to Moose Jaw via Prince George along with two way forward Even Fuller and a 3rd round pick in this year’s bantam draft. The Warriors did give up 18-year-old forward Brad Riege, 16-year-old forward Justin Maylan and Moose Jaw’s 1st round pick in this year’s bantam draft.

Regina made the majority of their deals the week previous to the trade deadline but did make one move the day before the deadline. The Pats acquired 19-year-old right winger Ryan Depage from Prince Albert for 19-year-old centerman Jared Jagow. Regina received size in Depage who stand 6’2" and weighs 214 lbs.

The Swift Current Broncos were somewhat busy on Thursday as they traded 17-year-old goaltender Ian Curtis to the Prince George Cougars for 19-year-old defenseman Jesse Dudas and forward prospect Catlin Foley. In addition, the Broncos acquired 18-year-old goaltender Mark Guggenberger from the Portland Winter Hawks for a conditional 2009 draft pick.
Dudas is in his 4th season in the Western Hockey League and was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Foley was originally drafted by the Cougars in the 6th round, 120th overall in the 2007 Bantam Draft and is native of Cornach, SK. Head Coach Dean Chynoweth states "Catlin is presently playing in Notre Dame and will add to our young group of 1992 born forwards." Guggenberger is from Richfield, MN and is 6’3", 208 lbs. He is in his 1st season in the WHL.
