2005 WHL BANTAM DRAFT PRELIM MOCK DRAFT

1. Regina Pats-(DALE HUNT) MANITOBA
With the first pick in the 2005 WHL bantam draft the Regina Pats look for the best talent available since they have Brett Leffler who is sure to be a star in the making and Logan Pyett, Nick Ross on defense to build around as well. The Pats decide to stay closer to home in picking Dale Hunt from Manitoba. Hunt will give the Pats perhaps the most dynamic player in the draft once again and the thoughs of Leffler and Hunt combo make the Pats salivate. Hunt lit it up this year scoring 74-89-163 with league games and tournament action combined. In the 2005 provincials he continued his torrid pace with 15 points in 5 games. Hunt is already 5’11 175lbs which suggests he’ll have decent size to go with his scoring touch. The Pats are forming a very scary PP in the future with Bernhardt, Leffler, Hunt, Ross and Pyett which should lead them to great things 2-3 years down the road.

2. Swift Current Broncos-(Kyle Beach) Britich Columbia
The Broncos are disappointed to see Hunt picked by the Pats and think about taking a surprise early pick on Rylan Schwartz who played with Notre Dame in the SSMHL. The Broncos think they’ve found the most complete player in the draft and definitely the top power forward ala Colton Gillies who was chosen last year by the Blades. Beach has to work on his temper though as he amassed over 280 Pims this year. Kyle also has shown a scoring touch with 48-39-87 this year in 43 games played. Kyle really wants to go first overall he says "It would be nice just to know, and obviously for bragging rights, but it's not something that I worry about. If I just go out there and play my game, then everything should fall into place. It's there and it will always be there, but I try to let it go and not worry about it. Worrying about that too much will cause me to try and do to much and that's not going to help my team," Beach said. A scout says this about Beach "I can't imagine most of the teams wouldn't want a guy that big, with that skill package and a mean streak," said Dupas. "That's the prototypical power forward that everybody is looking for."!

3. Prince George Cougars-(Rylan Schwartz) Saskatchewan
The Cougars with Ryan Kerr already waiting in the wings and a pleathra of young defenseman waiting in the wings decide to take a somewhat surprising pick here in Rylan Schwartz of Notre Dame Saskatchewan. Rylan will give the Cougars something they thought they were getting in Tyler Swystun from the 03 draft until he decided to take the college route. Rylan Schwartz has been at or near the top in every tournament this season thus far. He scored 26-40-66 points to lead his league in scoring in the SSBHL. He scored over 2 points per game in every tournament he played in as well with 4-13-17 in the Playoffs too. Rylan should give the Cougars a reliable offensive talent to depend on down the road and is a start to some unsuccessful drafts in years past.

4. Spokane Chiefs-(Colton Teubert) British Columbia
The Chiefs take the first defenseman in the draft and select Semiahmoo’s Colton Teubert. Colton gives the franchise a “franchise” type defenseman to build around and compliments offensives stars in the making Drayson Bowman and Mike Reich. Teubert has shown some offensive ability but is an all around good defenseman and a great leader. Colton was named to the first all-star all BC team this year and is arguably the best defenseman in the draft. He stands 6’0 175 already and should give the Chiefs someone to lead them both offensively and defensively for years to come.

5. Moose Jaw Warriors-(Neal Prokop) Manitoba
The Warriors think long and hard about taking a defenseman once again in Blain Tendler of Notre Dame but doesn’t they can’t pass up on one of the top pure offensive talents around. Neal will give the Warriors a good sized forward with scoring ability and some grit. Prokop showed his offensive talents by scoring 34-34-68 to lead his league in scoring with the Winnipeg Sharks. Prokop stands at 6’2 and 166lbs which should translate into a big 6’4 200 by the time he’s 18 giving the Warriors a big body with some of there smaller talents from years past.

6. Kamloops Blazers-(Jordan Trach) Saskatchwan
The Blazers decide to take the best player available here at this spot after seeing a couple players they wanted slip by. The Blazers go to the prairies for the 2nd year in a row after picking sniper Travis Dunstall last year. In Trach, the Blazers get a good defensive forward who is an all around reliable player. Trach played this past season with the Battleford Stats of the SMAAAHL which show something of his great talent for his age. Not only did he play but played well in the Midget hockey league by scoring 13-11-24. Jordan stands 6’ 190lbs and won’t shy away from the rough stuff either. The Blazers are excited to have landed this stand out player at 6th overall.

7. Tri City Americans-(Blaine Tendler) Saskatchewan
With a very unsuccessful draft in 2003 when the Ams took Jonathan Toews first overall and he didn’t report, the Ams really bounced back last year with some top notch offensive picks to make up for that with the likes of Travis Dunstall etc. This year the Ams decide to add and offensive dman in Blain Tendler from Saskatchewan and Notre Dame. Tendler has proven all year to be at or near the top in Western Canada for defenseman in every tournament he’s played racking up piles of assists. Including tournament play, Blaine scored 15-43-58 this year and the Ams hope he can one day QB their PP.

8. Prince Albert Raiders-(Lucas Mikkelson) Alberta
The Raiders select a smallish Lucas Mikkelson with their first round pick here. Lucas is not overly big at only 5’9.5 160 but he showed grow and the Raiders feel the same. They are loaded with bigger, younger forwards in Depape, Ottman, Elder etc and feel added a speedstar and pure scorer like Mikkelson is needed for the future. Lucas lead his league in scoring this year in the AMBHL SOUTH with 33-42-75 while racking up a huge 5-7-12 in 4 games played in the playoffs. Lucas will give the Raiders a talented Wacey Rabbit type player that will excite the fans and this will not be a mistake pick at all despite the gamble.

9. Vancouver Giants-(Mike Reddington) British Columbia
The Giants think about taking a forward here with this pick but decide to stay closer to home and pick Mike Reddington.. Mike has proven all season long to be one of the top defenders in BC while playing for the NSWC. Mike was named to the first All-Star all BC team this season and showed a gritty, rough style that the Giants want to build around phenom in the making Tyson Sexsmith who they chose in the 1st round last season. Mike won’t rack up many points but will be great at clearing the front of the net and punishing offensive players coming into the zone. Mike should fill out to be about 6’4 210 and the Giants are excited to add this player to the lineup.

10. Everett Silvertips-(Jordan Eberle) Saskatchewan
The Tips are extremely happy to land Jordan Eberle who is an offensive dynamo. Jordan haa always scored at every leval of hockey but some worry about his size at 5’8.5 currently. However it seems as though many are looking for some guy to score in this day and age of low scoring hockey and the Tips think they’ve found there man here. Jordan scored 40-27-67 this year in his regular season while adding 6-5-11 in 5 playoff games. Jordan will give the Tips someone to play sniper and give their fans something to cheer about to play with Hamill down the road.

The remainder of round 1 Brief analysis only
11. Portland Winterhawks-(Travis Bobbee) Manitoba
Actually played some Midget AAA hockey this year. The Hawks are pleased to have seen him slip to 11th. 9-11-20 in AAA Midget. Did well at every tourmant played in and may be the best offensive type dman in the draft. Could go higher easily.
12. Red Deer Rebels-(Eric Mestery) Manitoba
Biggest dman to go in the 1st at 6’4 163. The Rebels feel the need to select the big dman after loading up in previous drafts with forwards. Mestery has shown a little big of a scoring touch and can only dream of him as the next Phaneuf!

13. Calgary Hitmen-(Ian Curtis) British Columbia
The Hitmen decide to select a goalie here feeling they are set with top notch forwards in Dansereau and White and defenseman with Alzner and Plante. Curtis is the consensus top goalie in the draft and the Hitmen bite. He was named top goalie at 2 tournaments this season.

14. Saskatoon Blades-(Brayden Metz) Saskatchewan
The Blades are happy to see Brayden fall this far otherwise they would’ve selected a dman to run the powerplay in the future. However with Bobbee and Tendler gone the Blades pick Metz.. Metz saw some time with the RPC of the SMAAAHL and didn’t look out of place at all. Metz has shown good offensive upside with 8-10-18 at the St. Albert tourny and 4-5-9 in 4 games at the Elite Hockey Challenge.

15. Lethbridge Hurricanes-(Brandon Rowinski) Manitoba
Many have Brandon as the top Manitoba sniper ahead of even Prokop. Rowinski has put up solid numbers with 28-26-54 with the Winnipeg Hawks this past season. Brandon stands 5’10 152.

16. Seattle Thunderbirds-(Tyler Schmidt) Manitoba
Good offensive upside, good skater and a defenseman paired with Hickey that could really produce big numbers. Scored 3-30-33 this past season. Many rank him as the next best behind Bobbee for dmen in the province. Schmidt stands 6’0 177 which should fill out nicely by the time he’s 18-19 to a 6’3 200 pounder to compliment Hickey nicely.
