Caught the third period on the radio, but other than that this is once again a box score-based recap. Good to see the Giants and Sexsmith bounce back and play their usual brand of disciplined hockey.

Vancouver 4 Brandon 1

The Vancouver Giants bounced back, after a less than stellar performance in Regina last night, against one of the highest scoring teams in the league. They brought a solid road game to Manitoba and shut down the high-flying Wheat Kings in their own building. Taking advantage of their PP the G-Men went 2 for 3 on the man-advantage while blanking their opponent on all four of their power-play chances. Jonathon Blum opened the scoring on the PP 5:17 into the first, set-up by CPZ and Brent Regner who posted a –1 tonight despite getting two PP assists. Centre Daniel Bartek got that back about two minutes later, tying the game. Evander Kane put his team back up by one before the end of the first period, scoring his first of two on the night and earning first star honours for his efforts. Spencer Machacek notched his 23rd goal of the season, off of Regner early in the second to pad the visitor’s lead to two. The marker came on the PP. Chad Erb and Chris Cloud dropped the mitts mid second. Cloud got the instigator and a 10 minute misconduct, while Erb got an interference penalty on top of his fighting major.

The game stayed like that until the 15 minute mark of the third when Kane tallied his second of the game extending their lead to three goals and putting the game out reach. CPZ and Mike Berube assisted on the 2 on 1 breakaway goal, which saw CPZ breaking up the ice and feathering a pas onto the stick of Kane who made a sweet fore-hand to backhand move, tickling the twine behind Joe Caligiuri. The Vancouver team now has a 21-0 record taking a lead into the third period and despite a few uncharacteristic third period breakdowns this season, they have been very solid holding onto leads late in the game. The Giants held the Wheaties to just 17 shots on Sexsmith, who put together a solid effort after getting shredded the night before. The Giants head to the Raider’s house for their next game on Tuesday January 15th. The puck drops at 7:30 local time at the Art Hauser Centre.
