Listened to this one on the radio.. not a bad game, but it sounded as if the Giants didn't maintain their focus in the game. The interview with Craig Bonner afterward kind of said it all -- happy to get the win, but not really over-joyed with how they went about getting it.

Giants Quell Raiders
Vancouver 4 Prince Albert 2

The Giants were the better team tonight, but backed off with the lead and gave the Raiders some life in the game when they let up in PA tonight. The Giants got their very first win in Prince Albert since joining the league and were visiting the city for the first time since November 2005. Evander Kane kept his streak going scoring the first goal of the game, his 17th of his rookie season. He is poised to challenge Gilbert Brule’s rookie numbers with the Giants. Brule scored 25 in his rookie year. Spencer Machacek padded that lead 4 minutes into the second, with a sweet high-light reel goal. Lance Bouma and Craig Schira got the helpers. Machacek then scored his team leading 25th of the season just over two minutes later off of Bouma and James Wright, putting the G-Men up 3-0 . That would be all for Raider’s ‘tender Dustin Butler who allowed three goals on seventeen shots.

Former Giant draft pick Nathan Deck, who went to PA in the AJ Thelen trade, finally put his team on the score sheet just past the mid-way mark of the second. He was nicely set-up by the Raider’s team points leader Matt Robertson. Jonathon Blum would get that one back on an unassisted tally late in the second. Blum challenged the PA forward at the Raider blue line, stripped the puck and took the biscuit down the slot burying it behind Raider’s back-up Steven Stanford - restoring the Giants three goal bulge. The only goal in the third came off of Tomas Voracek’s stick, benefiting from another great set-up play by Matt Robertson. Max Brandl got the second assist. The Giants had the game in hand, but then sat back a bit in latter stages allowing the home team some life they shouldn’t have had. The G-Men need to remember to keep their focus in games like this and maintain their level of energy and competitive edge, as they sagged a bit and allowed the Raiders a couple of goals they probably shouldn’t have got. They were fairly disciplined tonight despite that as they were only tagged with two minor penalties.

The Giants out shot their opponent’s 34 – 17 and went 0 for 5 on the PP, squandering their man-advantage opportunities. They held the home team to 0 for 2 on the PP and managed to keep out of the box and out of trouble for most of the evening. The Giants head back to Saskatoon, where they hope the weather has let up, and need to prepare to face the Saskatoon Blades at the Credit Union Centre. The puck drops at 7:05 local time, 5:00pm PST.

Three Stars

1. Spencer Machacek
