Thursday notes . . .
THE MacBETH REPORT: Dallas has recalled F John Lammers from his assignment to Ässät Pori in Finland’s SM-Liiga and re-assigned him to Iowa (AHL). Lammers has no goals and four assists in 23 games for Ässät with 24 PIMs and was minus-5. . . . F Sami Sandell (Brandon) has been loaned out by his club, Ilves Tampere, to Lempäälä in Finland’s Mestis. Sandell has two goals, four assists, eight PIMs and is minus-2 in 39 games. . . .
The Tri-City Americans are scheduled to meet the Hurricanes in Lethbridge on Saturday. Tri-City LW Colton Yellow Horn, who leads the WHL in goals, is from Brocket, Alta., not too far from Lethbridge, and, in fact, he was acquired from the Hurricanes. He has a huge following in the Lethbridge area, resulting in the fact that the game has been sold out for a while now. Annie Fowler, who covers the Americans for the Tri-City Herald, has a terrific story on what’s in store for Yellow Horn and the Americans.
THURSDAY CHATTER: Former Moose Jaw Warriors D Lane Manson has gone from the ice to the hardwood. He now is at the U of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and wearing No. 32 for the Huskies men’s basketball team. Manson played a bit in four non-conference games earlier this month and now is on the roster. In case you have forgotten, Manson, who turns 24 on Valentine’s Day, is 6-foot-9 and 270 pounds. . . . Manson played three seasons with the Warriors (2001-04) and was taken by the Atlanta Thrashers in the fourth round, 124th overall, of the 2002 NHL draft. He went on to play in the ECHL with the Gwinnett Gladiators and Dayton Bombers. Manson, who hasn’t played basketball for six years, started this hockey season with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers but now has seen fit to pursue an education. He is an Arts and Science student at the U of S. He has stayed in touch with basketball by playing during summers. . . . Manson’s sister Haley is a freshman on the U of S women’s volleyball team. . . .
Has there been anything more hilarious this hockey season than the reaction to whatever it was that happened at the end of the Wednesday night game between the Everett Silvertips and the Chiefs in Spokane? . . . Have there every been so many unbiased biased reports on one incident. . . . I mean, people, get a grip. Chill out and then go back and take a look at what has been said. . . . If a look back doesn’t cause you to LOL and ROFL and do all of those other thingies, well, nothing will. . . .
It was the day after the night before and Spokane head coach Bill Peters wasn’t about to sing a different tune. "He's a high-maintenance guy," Peters told Jessica Brown of the Spokane Spokesman-Review. "This is right up his alley, it's part of his schtick. He's done this numerous times. It's all a big charade." Peters, of course, was referring to Everett F Kyle Beach, who hit the ice after taking a punch — the severity of which depends on your own personal bias — from Spokane captain Chris Bruton as that game ended. Eventually, Beach was fitted with neck support and then was helped from the ice by teammates. "Anyone knows if he's seriously injured, you take him off on a spineboard,” Peters continued, “that's what our doctor wanted to do and then his teammates
helped him off. The act is growing thin. It's one of those things. Some teams lay on the ice, some teams play straight up. His reputation is what it is and it's well-deserved." . . . According to Brown, “Everett's camp — general manager Doug Soetaert and head coach John Becanic — declined to comment on the matter when attempts were made to reach them
on Thursday. . . . Beach didn’t practice Thursday and is listed as doubtful for a game Friday against the visiting Portland Winter Hawks. . . . And here’s a vote for Bill Peters as the WHL’s coach of the year. Sorry, Ryan Huska, but you’re off the top rung on that ladder. In this era of Rule by Political Correctness, Peters has been a breath of fresh air. . . . In the meantime, Richard Doerksen, the WHL vice-president in charge of discipline, told the Everett Herald’s Nick Patterson that a review is ongoing. . . . Beach didn’t skate Thursday, although he was at practice. The Silvertips didn’t make him available to the media.
