Reimer/Reddin
The mystery about why the Red Deer Rebels gave up defenceman Zac Stebner to acquire goaltender David Aime in late November, only to leave Aime in Jr A, may have an explanation now. Rebels #1 goalie James Reimer is out for an extended period of time with a recurring ankle injury that first started bothering him back in November, and the Rebels have recalled Aime.

This might also explain why Reimer wasn't traded at the trade deadline. No contender would want to make a deal for a guy who was hobbled by a persistent injury.

The other bit of news I want to comment on today is this one. Portland announced back on January 10 that 17 year old Colin Reddin had decided to abandon his attempt to have his NCAA eligibility reinstated, and would join the Winter Hawks. Since then, Reddin has been practicing but not playing with the Hawks, because apparently USA Hockey won't give him his release from the National Team Development Program, where he was playing before.

We'll have to see how this shakes out....it's easy to criticize USA Hockey and say they should just let the kid go play where he wants, but I see their point as well, and it has WHL implications. If you let kids jump leagues at their whim, then you could be opening a real big can of worms. If one of their roster players decided he wanted to leave the WHL and play in the USHL instead, would the Hawks just give him his release from the WHL and let him go? Probably depends on the player, but you get the point. We'll see what happens here....
