Brandon, Manitoba – A former Manitoba AAA Midget League scoring champion has been chosen the Brandon Wheat King Player of the Month for January.

18-year old right-winger Nathan Green, who captured the provincial midget scoring title in 2005-06 as a member of the Winnipeg Wild, joins rookies Matt Calvert and Brayden Schenn as well as veteran Tyler Dittmer as this year’s recipients during the first four months of the 2007-2008 Western Hockey League regular season. In helping Brandon compile a .500 record (6-6-0-1) in January, the Winnipeg product was among the club scoring leaders with four goals and 11 points in thirteen games. Entering Friday’s game against the visiting Red Deer Rebels, the former fourth round pick (67th overall) of the Wheat Kings in 2004 WHL bantam draft has career highs in goals (10) assists (18) and points (28) in 47 games. Green scored 34 goals and 83 points in 41 games with the Wild two years ago before breaking into the WHL as a 17-year old rookie last winter. In 36 games last season, the 6’ 180 lb forward had three goals and six points.

Green and the Wheat Kings return to the friendly confines of Westman Communications Group Place this Friday when they play host to the visiting Red Deer Rebels. Friday’s game will be Brandon’s first home game in two weeks and will be the first of eight to be played at Westman Place during the month of February. Winners of three of their last four home games, Brandon will enter the weekend with a record of 30-18-0-2, good for 62 points and third place in the WHL’s Eastern Division – two points behind Moose Jaw.

In other news, Brandon will be without 19-year old defenceman Matt McCue for this weekend’s two games (Brandon plays in Moose Jaw on Saturday) as the Cochrane, Alberta product has been slapped with a 2-game suspension by the WHL for his checking from behind major that he received during Sunday’s 9-2 loss to the league leading Hitmen in Calgary.

Tickets to Friday’s game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca. In recognition of the monthly honour, Green will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Tip Top Tailors in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings during the club’s game against the Rebels on Friday night.
