BLADES 3 REBELS 1

The Saskatoon Blades are on a three-game winning streak.

Although they are all but mathematically eliminated from the WHL playoffs, the Blades continued their recent fine form with a 3-1 win over the Rebels in Red Deer on Friday night.

Chris Langkow, Ondrej Fiala and Travis Toomey notched the goals for the Blades (21-32-3-3).

Brandon Sutter scored the lone goal for the Rebels (16-37-4-2).

The undisciplined play of the Rebels resulted in the Blades spending large portions of the first two periods with the man-advantage.

Initially the power play was more a curse than a blessing for Saskatoon. With Brennen Wray of the Rebels in the sin bin just a minute into the contest, Sutter sniped a short-handed goal on a breakaway after sloppy passing by the Blades.

However, from then on the Blades made the best of the Rebels' recalcitrant antics. They got on the board five minutes after Sutter's goal when Chris Langkow potted a rebound following a slapshot by Jyri Niemi. Red Deer's Colin Archer was serving a penalty for too many men.

In the second frame, Fiala waited until Rebels goaltender Morgan Clark dropped to his knees and wristed the puck past the hapless goaltender for the Blades' second power-play goal. Luke Egener was in the box for hooking.

With Eneger in the box again five minutes later, Travis Toomey took several whacks at a loose puck before scoring to put Saskatoon up 3-1.

Goaltender Braden Holtby sealed the Blades' win when he stopped Troy Ofukany on a penalty shot with four minutes remaining.

The Blades finished the game 3-for-8 on the man advantage. The Rebels could not convert on four chances.

The Blades visit the Calgary Hitmen tonight at 8 p.m. They wrap up their three-game trip on Sunday with a 7 p.m. date with Kootenay. Both games are on 92.9 The Bull.
