Thunderbirds' O'Brien Named BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player of the Week

CALGARY, AB. - The BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player of the Week is forward Jim O’Brien of the Seattle Thunderbirds.

O’Brien picked up eight points, scoring two goals and four assists to go with a +7 rating in three games over the last week, helping the Thunderbirds post a 3-0 record in that span.

On Wednesday, February 20th, the Thunderbirds were home at the Key Arena in Seattle hosting the Prince George Cougars. O’Brien picked up three assists as the Thunderbirds downed the Cougars 6-1. He was also named the games 2nd Star.

On Friday, February 22nd, Seattle travelled to the Okanagan for one game against the Kelowna Rockets. O’Brien scored one goal and added two assists in Seattle’s 5-2 win over the Rockets.
On, Saturday, February 23rd, the Thunderbirds were back at the Key Arena in Seattle playing host to the Portland Winter Hawks. O’Brien netted one goal and one assist helping the Thunderbirds defeat the Winter Hawks 6-2.

O’Brien, a 19 year old from Maplewood, Minnesota, is in his first year of play in the Western Hockey League with the Seattle Thunderbirds. He spent last season playing for the University of Minnesota Gophers before choosing the WHL has his best development option. O’Brien was selected in the 1st round – 29th overall at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.

The WHL has also nominated Tyson Sexsmith of the Vancouver Giants for the ADT CHL Goaltender of the Week Award.
