PATS 3 OIL KINGS 0

Linden Rowat made 27 saves and Colton Teubert netted a goal and an assist as the Regina Pats blanked Edmonton 3-0 Friday for their fourth-straight win.

5,454 fans turned out for the game and they witnessed a wickedly fast-paced, yet hard-hitting game. Teubert's goal came midway through the first period and it stood up as the game-winner. Scott Doucet scored on the powerplay in the second frame to make it 2-0 Regina and Brett Leffler nailed the coffin lid shut midway through the third.

Regina was 0/2 on the powerplay but 3/3 killing penalties as they notched their 41st win. It also made their record 13-8-2 against non-playoff teams in their conference, and completed a four-game sweep of the Oil Kings in the season series.

The Oil Kings will miss the playoffs in their expansion season but have plenty to look forward to. They are expertly coached by Steven Pleau and have plenty of talent and speed.

Pats closing in on pennant

The Regina Pats took a meaningful step towards claiming their first East Division pennant in 10 years — yes, it has really been THAT long — with a 3-0 decision over the expansion Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday.
With the win — and a little help — Regina moved five points up on the Moose Jaw Warriors and Brandon Wheat Kings. Brandon was dumped 6-3 by the Saskatoon Blades while Moose Jaw lost 5-3 to the Prince Albert Raiders.
That leaves the Swift Current Broncos alone in second place, three points behind Regina. Swift Current beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-3.
The Pats, Broncos and Wheat Kings all have four games left. Moose Jaw has five.
"We’re watching the scores closely," admitted Pats head coach Curtis Hunt. "We’d love to get some favours just so we might have an opportunity to have a look at some younger guys but that being said you have to play your best hockey at this time of year. Being in this kind of race makes for a playoff-type mode, it makes for accountability on every shift and it makes for execution on every shift. Winning in the playoffs is all about great habits and great work ethic. If we can get better and better at establishing those, it’s just an advantage for us."
The Pats weren't exactly world-beaters against Edmonton, but they did hold a decisive territorial advantage through two periods. Goaltender Linden Rowat handled the rest with 27 saves, 12 of which came in the third period.
It was Rowat's third shutout of the campaign and his first since he posted back-to-back goose eggs against the Everett Silvertips and Medicine Hat Tigers in late November.
"(Getting the shutout) is always in the back of your mind but you kind of have to focus on the next shot that’s coming towards you," he said. "We (gave up) a few more odd-man rushes than we wanted but we got a key goal from (Brett) Leffler in the third. That seemed to take a little life out of them. The guys played great. I’m pretty happy they held out for me in the end."
It was the second straight rock-solid performance by Regina's starting netminder, who made 37 saves in Sunday's 3-1 win over the top-ranked Calgary Hitmen.
Rowat wasn't as busy against the Oil Kings, but he did come up big when the visitors made a push to start the third period. Leffler ended the drama with his first goal since Feb. 15. Colten Teubert scored once and set up Scott Doucet for another goal.
"I think we just came in with a gameplan and we excuted it," said Teubert. "We know we need these points. Every game is crucual right now coming down the stretch. We just have to win every game. If we win every game we’re fine."

Pats continue winning ways: Scouting Report
Regina hopes to win a fifth home game in a row tonight vs. Prince Albert

The Regina Pats are picking a good time to mark their territory.

With the club's first East Division pennant since 1998 hanging in the balance, Regina posted its fourth straight win -- all at home -- on Friday night with a 3-0 decision over the expansion Edmonton Oil Kings before 5,454 fans at the Brandt Centre.

The Pats will be looking to complete a perfect five-game homestand tonight against the Prince Albert Raiders. Regina has just four games left in the regular season.

"If we want that pennant we're going to need to win every game," offered Pats goalie Linden Rowat, who made 27 saves for his third shutout of the season and his 30th win of the campaign. "There's a lot of pressure on us. Even though Edmonton is out of the playoff run, they're a team that competes and works hard every night. They outshot us and at times they outworked us but I thought we persevered."

Edmonton set the pace off the opening faceoff, but the ice quickly tilted in favour of the Pats, who came on strong but were hard-pressed to turn their territorial advantage into concrete scoring chances. Defenceman Colten Teubert eventually found a clear path through Edmonton's diligent shot blockers at 5:32, blasting a shot from the point that went off the inside of the far post and behind goalie Dalyn Flette.

Edmonton continued to repel one wave after another until the home team made good on a power play at 12:41 of the second period. Once again, Teubert was the facilitator as he fired a shot towards the net that was deftly redirected by Scott Doucet.

Rowat proceeded to weather a late push by the Oil Kings, who recorded 12 of their 27 shots in the third period. Brett Leffler rewarded his goalie with an insurance goal midway through the frame, wiring a shot under the cross-bar on Flette.

"We know we've struggled with teams below us and we knew it wasn't going to be easy," noted Leffler. "We just had to play our game and keep it simple. We had a few defensive lapses but in the end we got the win."

Oil Kings head coach Steven Pleau was reluctant to credit his club for a moral victory against the top team in the East Division. However, he did give credit where it was due.

"I thought we played a good hockey game," said Pleau, whose team dropped to 20-36-4-7. "We outshot them (27-22) and I thought we outchanced them. They're a good team, a real good team. I thought we did some real good things. They made us pay on the power play with a beautiful goal. That was the difference."

Rowat threw in his two cents as well.

"We were backstopped tonight by tremendous goaltending," offered Pats head coach Curtis Hunt, whose team maintained its three-point edge over the second-place Swift Current Broncos. "You have to play your best hockey at this time of year. There as a business sense in the room (before Friday's game). We expect that again (tonight)."

EXTRAS: Regina finished with a 4-0 record against Edmonton this season ... Pats C Tim Kraus was helped off the ice in the first period favouring his right leg after falling awkwardly into the boards. He returned later in the period ... Regina's scratches were D Dallas Jackson (healthy) and LW Josh Elder (knee) ... Oil Kings RW Robin Figren, who turned down a trade to Regina at the Jan. 10 deadline, was scratched with a wrist injury.

PRINCE ALBERT (25-38-3-2) at REGINA (41-21-4-2)

Today, 7 p.m., Brandt Centre

Radio: 620 CKRM

Key injuries: REGINA -- LW Josh Elder (knee, indefinite); PRINCE ALBERT -- D Blaine Tendler (concussion, day-to-day), LW Jordan Trach (concussion, week-to-week).

Overview: It's the eighth and final meeting of the season between the Pats and Raiders. Regina leads the season series with a 5-2 record. The Pats won the first five meetings but have lost two in a row . . . The Raiders did Regina a favour on Friday with a 5-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Saskatoon Blades also helped out with a 6-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings. As a result, the Pats are five points up on Moose Jaw and Brandon in the East Division standings. The Swift Current Broncos are alone in second place. They beat Lethbridge 5-3 to remain three points back of Regina . . . Two ex-Pats are having career years with Prince Albert: C Ryan McDonald (26-31--57) and RW Justin Bernhardt (24-31--55) . . . Another former Pat, LW Jared Jagow, has five goals and five assists in 25 games since he was acquired on Jan. 9 for RW Ryan DePape. Prince Albert also received a third-round bantam pick in the deal. DePape has three goals and three assists in 23 games with Regina.

Pats turned it down a notch as they usually do for the weaker teams but they still give up very few very good scoring chances. The Pats were sloppy at times but they got back most of the time and when they did mess up Rowat was there. Needed the Win very badly and will need another win tonight against P.A.

side note: The refs did a wonderful job last night! I hate penalties and there was only 6? last night. It was beautiful to watch. No need to call every little thing like some refs...i give them props.

I wouldnt say the Pats turned it down a notch, Edmonton is a very hard working team. Our lack of scoring was evident on friday night, as we had some great chances to blow the game wide open but failed to do so. Doesnt matter who you are or who your playing, your opponent is always going to get some waves of pressure, you are going to break down eventually doesnt matter who your up agaisnt. That is where your goalie needs to show what he is made of and bail the boys out.

It was nice to hardly see any penalties called for a change. PP after PP is not exciting hockey to watch. We might of got outshot but for scoring chances and territorial play we dominated that aspect of the game against the Oil Kings. The Oil Kings were a great team for us to play agianst as they never stop working.

A quick little comment here......... I really like it when the Oil Kings come to Regina to play, that Brent Raedeke is a treat to watch, he is a very skilled 17 year old that i was sad to see traded by us just before the expansion draft. Yes i know why we traded him to the Oil Kings so we wouldnt loose a vetern player off our roster for this season, just too bad it was Raedeke that got singled out as a prospect.
