The Spokane Chiefs have announced Head Coach Al Conroy’s contract will not be extended for the 2005-06 season. Prior to the 2004-05 season, Conroy signed a two-year deal with the Chiefs holding the option for the second year. Conroy will remain under contract with the Chiefs until May 31st.

“As an organization we are not intending to shift the responsibility to only our head coach, but in evaluating the situation we did not take the necessary steps this season,” Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said. “I feel a change is necessary to get to the next level as a team.”

Conroy was the head coach from the 2002-03 season through the end of this regular season and ends his Chiefs tenure with an 82-103-18-13 regular season record.

“During his time in Spokane, Al has treated our organization, players and me with the utmost of class and respect. We appreciate his efforts and commitment and wish him and his family the best with his future opportunities,” Speltz finished.

Assistant Coaches Rikard Gronborg and Kevin Sawyer’s contracts also run through May 31st and their positions will be addressed prior to that.

This will definitely be good news to many Chiefs fans

Kevin Sawyer said he does not want the head coaching job, but does want to remain as an assistant, in case anyone was interested.
