Regina doesn't have the scoring

ROBSERVATIONS ...

- At this very sensitive time of the year, hockey coaches covet bulletin-board material -- printed words that will inspire their team. So here is a delectable morsel for Regina Pats head coach Curtis Hunt. It says here that the Swift Current Broncos will upend the Pats in the opening round of the WHL playoffs. Broncos in seven.

- The rationale: Regina will not provide its ace sniper, Jordan Eberle, with sufficient offensive support. Eberle's 42 goals ranked him among the WHL's leaders. However, Eberle had more than twice as many goals as any other Pats forward. Next in line was Michael MacAngus, who sniped 18 times. Swift Current, by contrast, boasts eight forwards with 19 or more goals.

- There would be an inclination to favour Regina if the Pats were a discernibly better defensive team than Swift Current. The numbers do not support such a contention. Swift Current allowed 205 goals -- one fewer than Regina -- while outscoring the Pats 244-217 over 72 regular-season games.

- Last week, this grumbler saw both sides of the WHL within a two-day span. Wednesday's game between the Pats and the host Moose Jaw Warriors was a treat to watch. Two nights later, the Pats and the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings subjected fans to a dreary display. To recap: Right defenceman retrieves chipped puck and passes to left defenceman, who chips puck along the boards to left winger, who robotically chips it into the zone. And that was on (get this) Fan Appreciation Night.

- Make that Fan Depreciation Night.

- The Brandt Centre ice surface is not conducive to demonstrations of finesse hockey. The puck always seems to be on edge. At the Civic Centre, the playing surface is considerably smoother, as is the game.
