Defenceman Newell called up to WHL club
COLLIN GALLANT

Tyson Newell arrived at Tigers practice with green hair and some instant credibility with his new teammates.

The 16-year-old defenceman, called up to boost the ranks during the WHL post-season, is still under suspension by the Saskatchewan major midget hockey league for his part in a post-game brawl on March 10.

He was one of 10 players from his hometown Prince Albert Mintos and Regina Pat Canadians suspended after the two teams fought following Prince Albert’s series clinching win.

Newell’s partner in the bloody post-game scrap that left 10 players with suspensions was Regina’s Drew Czerwonka — a first-round bantam pick of the Kootenay Ice.

“It got a bit blown out of proportion,” said Newell, who said that he and Czerwonka, who got seven games, were singled out as instigators of the melee.

The suspension likely carries over from league to league, and considering Newell has already sat three games with the now-eliminated Mintos, he may not be able to suit up until Game 4 of the upcoming series against Kootenay.

Until then, Newell is practicing and getting acquainted with Medicine Hat.

“I think it will be crazy in here,” he said of The Arena, which will host games Friday and Saturday before the series moves to Cranbrook. “Especially if it’s a sellout.”

Newell spent the WHL pre-season with the Tigers before rejoining the defending national midget AAA champion Mintos. The stay at home defenceman checks in at 6-foot-1.

He’s expected to boost a back line that’s taken a beating in the last couple weeks.

Rookie defenceman Cody Carlson and vet Pat Kozyra were back on the ice Tuesday at the Tigers’ first full practice since Saturday’s regular season finale.

Taking part in off-ice sessions were sturdy blue-liner Shayne Brown and sniper Tyler Ennis.

Grant back skating

Also skating was left-winger Colton Grant, who left last Friday’s game at Lethbridge after he was run in to an open penalty box door during a harmless looking rub out in the neutral zone.

“It was just a routine play, then bam! Solid steel,” said Grant who missed Saturday’s return match against the Hurricanes.

“The week off will definitely help. After 72 games most people are a little banged up.”

“We’ll have a good week of practice and get ready for the Ice.”
