Tuesday notes . . .
Hockey Canada will announce today the roster for the under-18 team that will play in the IIHF world championship in Kazan, Russia, from April 13-23. Pat Quinn is the team’s head coach and his staff includes newly named Red Deer Rebels head coach Jesse Wallin. . . . The Regina Leader-Post is reporting that Pats RW Jordan Eberle and D Colten Teubert will be on the roster. Also expected to be named is Moose Jaw Warriors D Travis Harmonic. . . .

SIGN HERE: Sources indicate that D Nick Ross of the Kamloops Blazers has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, who selected him 30th overall in the NHL’s 2007 draft. Kamloops acquired Ross from the Regina Pats in a deal made Jan. 4. The Regina Leader-Post reports that Ross got an entry-level contract worth the rookie maximum of US$875,000 per season should he play in the NHL. Ross, who turned 19 on Feb. 10, joined the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, after the Blazers’ season ended last week. . . . Ross’s signing comes a day after the Coyotes signed C Kyle Turris to an entry-level deal that at the NHL level will pay a base of $875,000 per season. Turris was the third overall pick in the 2007 draft. . . . The Coyotes have their last three top picks on their roster — Turris, C Peter Mueller, who was taken eighth overall from the Everett Silvertips in 2006, and F Martin Hanzal, who went 17th overall in 2005 and went on to play for the Red Deer Rebels. . . .

GAME 7: The Seattle Thunderbirds advanced to the second round of playoffs Tuesday with a 4-2 home-ice victory over the Kelowna Rockets. . . . The Thunderbirds, who lost the first two games of the series, came back to win four of the last five, including the middle three. . . . Seattle will open a second-round series with the top-seeded Tri-City Americans with games in Kennewick, Wash., on Friday and Saturday nights. . . . Attendance in Seattle was 3,077. . . . The Rockets were 0-for-8 on the PP; the Thunderbirds were 0-for-3. . . . Seattle forwards Bud Holloway, Greg Scott and Lindsay Nielsen each had a goal and an assist. . . . Holloway and Ian McKenzie gave Seattle a 2-0 lead before RW Brady Leavold scored for Kelowna with six seconds left in the first period. . . . Nielsen upped the lead to 3-1 with a key shorthanded goal early in the second period. . . . Kelowna LW Jamie Benn chopped into the lead late in the second. . . . Scott put it away with an empty-netter. . . . Kelowna finished with a 33-20 edge in shots. . . .

THE QUOTE: “They are the reigning Memorial Cup champions. They’re the B.C. Division champions this year. Come on — they’re not the underdog. What has my team won of late? Nothing. Did we win the U.S. Division? No. Did we win the President’s Trophy like they did a couple of years ago? No. These are two good teams going at, two good teams that will be prepared to compete.” — That’s is Spokane Chiefs head coach Bill Peters, in conversation with Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province. . . . Of course, Vancouver head coach Don Hay is of the opinion that is side is the underdog. . . . This is shaping up like a classic series.
