Wednesday notes. . . .
D Daryl Boyle, the captain of the Brandon Wheat Kings, has joined the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals, a farm team of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Boyle, 21, has used up his WHL eligibility. . . . RW Brady Leavold of the Kelowna Rockets now is with the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings. Leavold, who also has used up his WHL eligibility, left for Victoria right after the Rockets were eliminated by the Thunderbirds in Seattle on Tuesday. . . .
————————
Bobby Brett, the president of the Spokane Chiefs, also is the managing partner of the Bellingham, Wash., Bells of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League. Brett and his brother, George, are part of an ownership group that purchased the Bells over the winter. . . . Bobby Brett’s son, Beau, will play for the Spokane RiverHawks of the same league. Beau, a high school senior from Spokane, has committed to play baseball at USC. He is a left-handed hitting first baseman. . . .

Hockey Canada has unveiled the roster of the team that will represent it at the IIHF under-18 championship in Kazan, Russia, April 13-23. The team, which leaves for Europe on Monday, includes seven WHLers on its 22-man roster — C Brayden Schenn and D Colby Robak of the Brandon Wheat Kings, C Jordan Eberle and D Colten Teubert of the Regina Pats, RW Brandon McMillan and D Tyler Myers of the Kelowna Rockets and D Travis Hamonic of the Moose Jaw Warriors. . . . Red Deer Rebels head coach Jesse Wallin is one of the assistants under head coach Pat Quinn, while Dave (Radar) Horning of the Rebels is the equipment manager. . . .

JUST NOTES: G Tyson Sexsmith of the Vancouver Giants didn’t practise Wednesay, the third straight day he hasn’t skated with his teammates. The Giants maintain that he has simply been given some time off. . . . Sexsmith was on the ice with goaltending coach Sean Murray on Wednesday and head coach Don Hay says Sexsmith will practise Thursday before the team climbs on its bus and heads off to Spokane. . . . Drew Schoneck, the head coach of the Prince George Cougars, played for the Tri-City Americans (1993-94) and makes his offseason home there. Which is how it is that he will be doing some radio work next week. Schoneck will help host Rob Francis with one-hour pregame shows prior to Games 3 and 4 of the Americans’ series with the Thunderbirds in Seattle. . . . “This whole (U.S.) division is fun to watch,” Schoneck told the Tri-City Herald’s Annie Fowler. “This division can skate — that was a big reason we had limited success against them. I think Tri-City holds the physical edge and their goaltender (Chet Pickard) could be the difference. Top to bottom, there is a reason they won the league — they are a dangerous team.” . . . Former WHL GM/head coach Doug Sauter has completed 13 seasons as the head coach of the Central league’s Oklahoma City Blazers. He recently was inducted into the Blazers Hall of Fame and owner Bob Funk presented him with a new pickup truck during a pregame ceremony in front of more than 13,000 fans. . . . "I was a little bit overwhelmed by it all," Sauter told The Daily Oklahoman. "But it's been a great career here and a great career for 34 years of coaching hockey. Life has its ups and downs and sometimes life isn't fair, as people know. We know what we have to do to right this hockey club (after missing the playoffs). I've got some decisions to make at the end of the season about what's going to happen and what, where and when. I'll make those at the appropriate time." . . . Sauter is one of two coaches in minor pro history to have put up 500 victories with one club. He got his 500th victory with the Blazers on Feb. 23. The other is Frank Mathers, who won 610 games in 17 seasons with the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
