Thursday is the Bantam draft. Starts at 8:30 a.m. and should end around 4 p.m. One of the deepest draft ever. The top five could go anywhere from first to fifth depending what teams are looking for. Saskatoon Blades have the best shot at improving their club with two first round picks. They pick #3 and #6 in the first round and #8 in the second round. Thats three picks in the top 30.

WHL draft: deep talent pool
WHL has a legion of gifted bantams to choose from in this year's draft
Cory Wolfe, The StarPhoenix
Published: Wednesday, April 30, 2008
The smorgasbord of talent features a bit of everything: Smooth West Coast skaters, strapping Prairie defencemen and flashy Texas shooters.
Western Hockey League teams convene Thursday to divvy up that talent. The annual bantam draft begins at 8:15 a.m. at Calgary's Roundup Centre.
"There's no clear-cut No. 1," says Tyler Neisz of International Scouting Services, "but that does not mean it's a weak draft."
The crop of 1993-born players features tons of top-end talent -- the most, perhaps, since the 2002 draft. That spring's top 10 included forwards Gilbert Brule, Daniel Bertram and Devin Setoguchi, plus goaltender Carey Price.
Scouting teenagers remains an inexact science, but the Saskatoon Blades should be able to land a couple of franchise cornerstones with the third and sixth overall picks.
The Red Deer Rebels select first and seem sold on B.C. forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Burnaby Winter Club. Other elite forwards include Winnipeg's Michael St. Croix and Airdrie, Alta., winger Ty Rattie.
Weyburn centre Brent Benson is the best Saskatchewan prospect, and scouts project he'll be the best two-way player of the bunch.
"He's got a body like Sidney Crosby," one scout says of Benson, a 5-foot-11 centre. "He's all legs and he's very strong on his skates."
Among defencemen, two Albertans lead the way: Sherwood Park's Duncan Siemens and Red Deer's Mitch Topping.
WILDCARDS ABOUND
Forward Brendan Hurley is usually the first player mentioned after the so-called Big Six. Don't underestimate the Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., product, though.
Neisz likens Hurley to Everett Silvertips powderkeg Kyle Beach. Everett picked Beach 10th overall in 2005, and he was the WHL's rookie of the year two seasons later.
"(Hurley) could end up being the best player in the draft," says Neisz. "He combines goal scoring with tons of grit. It's just a matter of holding his emotions in check."
Some elite American forwards, most notably Texas Attack centre Colin Jacobs and Los Angeles Junior Kings winger Shane McColgan, also figure to be wildcards. Some scouts hype Jacobs as the best American-born player since Mike Modano. Jacobs's teammate, Cason Hohmann, also shows tremendous offensive instincts, but his 5-foot-7 frame might deter some teams.
"An American team that picks fairly high might take a chance on one of those guys," says Neisz. "There's always a question of whether top-end American talent will come."
SASKATOON 'NOT AS STRONG'
Most scouts view the Saskatoon bantam league as a source of depth players. The last six drafts have produced 13 first-rounders from here, but no local talent ranks that high this time.
"The Saskatoon contingent is definitely not as strong as it has been," says one Eastern Conference scout. "I don't foresee anyone from Saskatoon being a first-rounder. That streak is going to end."
Since 2002, WHL teams have drafted 78 Saskatonians -- an average of 13 players per year. The local draft class might reach double digits again this year, but scouts rank most of the Saskatoon players as middle-round prospects.

That mock draft list looks pretty bang on too me.
I agree, good effort based on everything I have seen and heard about the top prospects.
I think it might have been written before the Alberta Cup last weekend though, because based on what I have heard about Mark McNeill's performance at Alberta Cup, he'll be gone long before Swift Current at #12.

Rebels ready to use No.1 selection
Greg Harder, The Leader-Post
Published: Thursday, May 01, 2008
Who's No. 1?
Only the Red Deer Rebels know for sure as they prepare -- barring an unexpected trade -- to make the first overall selection during today's WHL bantam draft in Calgary.
"We're looking at two to three guys and we want to be darn sure that we have every detail covered," Rebels head scout Randy Peterson told the Red Deer Advocate. "After the Alberta Cup during the (past) weekend (in Lloydminster), the gap tightened to a certain degree."
The Rebels aren't tipping their hand, other than to say they're likely to pick a forward. It has been speculated they may be leaning towards Mark McNeill of Edmonton or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, B.C.
Other options include Ty Rattie of Airdrie, Alta., Brent Benson of Weyburn and Winnipeg's Michael St. Croix.
Nugent-Hopkins and McNeill have distinguished themselves recently at top tournaments. Nugent-Hopkins was the MVP of the Western Canada bantam championship while McNeill was the top scorer at the Alberta Cup.
"We've put a lot of time and energy into this first overall pick and we know who's available to us," added Peterson, who said he doesn't expect to trade the pick. "We're going to use the first overall pick ... but you never know what might happen."
- - -
Keep an eye on Chad Lang.
The Moose Jaw Warriors' GM isn't shy about pulling off blockbuster trades, as evidenced by the fact that he swung a major deal with the Portland Winter Hawks at last year's draft to land the first overall pick, using it to select Quinton Howden.
Moose Jaw doesn't have a first-round pick this season, having sent the 11th overall selection to the Prince George Cougars in the deal for star defenceman Ty Wishart. Prince George also received Moose Jaw's first-rounder from the previous year, forward Justin Maylan, who was taken 17th overall.
The absence of a first-round pick in two straight years could prove fatal down the road, unless Lang can work some magic.
"We knew what the pricetag was when we made the Wishart deal and we were all comfortable with that," Lang told the Moose Jaw Times-Herald. "If the right deal comes up that maybe involves a player (in exchange for a first-round pick) we might explore it, but at the same time we're all comfortable coming to camp with the personnel we had last year and all of those guys we have on our 50-man roster."
Lang correctly pointed out that draft-day trades could be more common this year since each of the past two drafts landed on expansion years. WHL rules permitted the Chilliwack Bruins and Edmonton Oil Kings to veto any player transactions at the draft.
"This year is a unique year," said Lang. "The last two seasons were expansion and it basically restricted you from making any trades right at the draft table because at that point you had to get permission from the expansion team to make a player transaction. This year being back the way it was three years ago I think you're going to see more player movement at the draft table."
Lang already made a pre-emptive strike by acquiring two fourth-round picks from the Kamloops Blazers for third- and fifth-rounders in 2009. One of those fourth-rounders has already been sent to the Saskatoon Blades to complete a deal made early last season for defenceman Brett Ward.
Moose Jaw now has five picks in the first 100.

Spokane Chiefs head coach Bill Peters did a nice job of summing up the emotions of his team's seven-game victory over the Tri-City Americans in the Western Conference final.
Five of the seven games went to overtime, including three to double OT.
"I don't even have the emotion of elation; it's more of relief," Peters told reporters after the game. "The closeness of the series, the emotions that were involved and just how hard it was to get this thing looked after. Over the last 10-11 days, it's some of the best hockey I've been a part of. When people look back on this series over time, it's going to be a classic. It probably should be an instant classic already."
The Chiefs will meet the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the WHL final, beginning Friday in Spokane. Lethbridge has been off for eight days since sweeping the Calgary Hitmen in the Eastern Conference final. Spokane, which lost the 2000 WHL final to the Kootenay Ice, hasn't won a league title since 1991, the same year it also captured the Memorial Cup.
The Hurricanes are making their first trip to the WHL final since they won it in 1997.

the Blades pick St. Croix third, doubt Siemens would've gone to PA or Edmonton since they've picked d-men in the 1st round last year but I guess he was to good to pass up. Benson better be just as good as St. Croix though. The Blades NEED goal scorers.

First round picks
The draft is underway now, and at #1 overall, Red Deer has gone to Burnaby Winter Club for their first round pick three straight years now: it's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Extremely hard working, gifted playmaker. Won back-to-back BC bantam titles with BWC, including Western Canadian title in 05-06. Excellent skater, good leadership abilities (captain of BWC in 07-08). Owns a very slight frame so size/strength could be only issue depending on how he grows. Profile of him from the Burnaby NewsLeader paper.
At #2 overall, Portland picks Ty Rattie from the Airdrie Xtreme.

07-08: South Senators (Alberta Cup) 5 8 2 10 4
Outstanding goal scorer who can put the puck in the net from anywhere in the offensive zone. Excellent at finding the holes and getting open for a pass and a shot. Set the Alberta bantam league goalscoring record this year and is hands down the best sniper available in the draft. Had more goals by himself than the entire Camrose AMBHL team did this season. Needs a little work defensively but has a very good work ethic. Unafraid of going to the tough spots in pursuit of a goal. Projects as top-line winger. Profile from the Calgary Herald.
At #3 overall, Saskatoon completes the Setoguchi deal by using Prince George's pick to take the first defenceman, Duncan Siemens.

Excellent two-way defenceman who can move the puck effectively offensively and be a shut-down player against the other team's top forwards defensively. Skating is very good. Plays very physically and has a bit of a mean streak but not a dirty player. Heavy, accurate slapshot makes him a threat from the point offensively. Captain of Sherwood Park's Alberta and Western Canadian bantam champion team. Projects as #1 defenceman.
With the #4 pick, Edmonton goes to Manitoba and takes Michael St. Croix.

Extremely smart, gifted playmaker with excellent skating ability, on-ice vision and creativity. Head and shoulders better than any other bantam in Manitoba. Son of former NHL goaltender Rick St. Croix and brother to former WHLer Chris St. Croix. Two-year member of Winnipeg Monarchs' back-to-back Manitoba AAA bantam champion teams, and captain of the 07-08 team.

That's it for the non-playoff teams. Playoff teams start now at #7 with Kamloops, and they take
diminutive Edmonton forward Colin Smith. Smith was a teammate in 06-07 with Brendan Ranford, who was Kamloops' 1st round pick last year.

At #9 is Everett, and they go with Saskatchewan defenceman Ryan Murray.

At #13, Kelowna is using Brandon's pick, so it looks like the two teams just swapped first round picks. Kelowna will have gotten a little something-something from the Wheaties for that....probably another pick in the middle rounds but we'll find out for sure later.
Anyway, Kelowna picks the first American player, Shane McColgan. That's two years in a row the Rockets have gone south of the border in the first round. McColgan could be one of the best talents in the draft but again, there's the question of whether he's committed to the WHL.

Second round picks
Firstoff, I'd like to apologize to the legions of Portland fans I offended by stating Everett was the first US team to pick in the first round. I have absolutely no inside information regarding Portland being moved to Canada for next year. Ummmm.......
For the second round picks, I'll update every 4-5 picks or so.
Before the second round gets underway, a quick note on the Brandon/Kelowna trade in the first round. Brandon has given Kelowna a 4th round pick (#79 overall) in return for that swap of first rounders.

Fourth round picks
First, an update on the swap of picks in the 2nd round between Prince Albert and Everett.....P.A.'s website says the Silvertips gave up a 3rd round pick in 2009 to make the swap. Wow....I'm sorry, but a 3rd round pick is a ridiculous price to move up just four spots in the freakin' second round. The Tips must have really, really, REALLY liked Tyler Giebel to give up a 2nd and a 3rd round pick for him. Crazy.
Fourth rounders now....I'm not going to list the trade details anymore. See the post below with the draft list if you want details of how picks were traded.

Sixth round picks
If this draft holds true to past years, there's probably a lunch break between the fifth and sixth rounds. Stay tuned....
Vancouver has traded '91 defenceman Linden Saip to Kamloops for future considerations. No word on whether that deal happened during the lunch break when Scott Bonner bumped into Craig Bonner in the buffet line.
Prince George acquired a 5th round pick from Saskatoon for future considerations. It's the pick they used to select Bryton Udy.
In both these deals, the "futures" are probably 2009 draft picks.
To the sixth round picks now...

At this point, Medicine Hat passes their pick....the first pass of the draft and usually a sign that things are going to start wrapping up soon.
Incidentally, my pick #'s are going to start varying from the WHL's now, but that's because THE WHL DOESN'T DO THIS RIGHT!!!! For God knows what reason, they count passed picks with numbers still, leading to an incorrect overall # being assigned to players after this point.

This time last year, Fiedler was being talked about as a potential #1 overall pick in 2008. So why is he being picked so much later this year? Good question.
