With the upcoming NHL draft what are Pats' fan's thoughts on this years' Entry Draft?

Will Jordan Eberle go in the first round? Or will his size be a factor and cause him to slip to the second round (or later)? Will Colten Teubert go in the first round? Top ten? or drop to the 2nd round? Wll Matt Delahey get drafted? Any surprise picks from the Pats?

Feel free to discuss.

I have added a poll in regards to Teubert/Eberle (note it is a public poll).

Central Scouting on Tuebert:
"Colten is a smooth skating defenseman, who can skate the puck out of trouble and can jump up the ice with the puck. I like Colten for a lot of reasons, but most of all for his ability to take charge of the game. He projects as a support three or four defenseman, at least initially in the NHL, with a good offensive upside who won’t hurt you on defense."

Three Pats – NHL Central Scouting invited three players from the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats to the Scouting Combine – Colten Teubert, the No. 18-rated North American player, No. 33 Jordan Eberle and No. 67 Matt Delahey.

"It's pretty special that we all came into the league as rookies together and now we've moved along the line and developed," Delahey told NHL.com. "It's pretty sweet that we're all here at the Combine with an opportunity to get drafted."

While Teubert is the most physically imposing of the bunch and Eberle, who won the WHL's Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Scholastic Player of the Year award, is the brain, Delahey is a bit of an unknown heading into the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, to be held June 20-21 in Ottawa. The 18-year-old defenseman hopes his Combine showing increases his value.

"I basically helped Colten and Jordan out most of the time," Delahey admitted. "I'm a bit of a stay-at-home defenseman who makes sure everything is sound in my own defensive zone. I'm a good skater for a big guy and, while probably not as physical as Colten, can hold my own. I also can offer that good first pass."

Jordan EBERLE - may go in the first or second round. His performance last season may hurt him. Jordan got off to a great start, first few weeks was second in scoring, and had the most goals. He then petered off and had a so-so season. If he had kept up his great performance through out the season, I would say up in the early part of the first round.

TEUBERT - the same, may go in the first or second round.

Will have to wait, and see, but I wish them the best, all round.

Performance might hurt him? He had 42 goals. That performance won't hurt his stock at all.

I think Eberle will go in the first round. 20-25th overall is my guess.

And with Teubert my guess will be anywhere from 15th overall to 25th.

The oilers are pretty high on Eberle right now. I think he would work wonders if he played with Gagner down the line.

I see him going 22nd to the oilers, or earlier. He is probably the best goal scorer available in the draft behind Stamkos. I think he could very well pull a 'Hickey' this year and go way higher than predicted. Underrated player by scouts.

As for Teubert, he is big, physical and can skate. He will definitely be a first rounder on that alone. His offensive skills, or what scouts think he can pan out to be, will influence how high he will go.

He is a pretty safe pick though. I dont see him being picked ahead of the big 4 guys (Doughty, Bogosian, Pieterangelo, Schenn), or Myers who I think is overrated. But I dont see him still on the table by the end of the 1st round.

Eberle, Jordan - C - Regina
Jordan Eberle / Regina Pats WHL
C-R / 5-10, 174 / 15-May-1990

Skating: 60 / Skill: 70 / Sense: 60 / Compete: 30 / Tough: 45

Strengths: Great sniper's touch. Knows how to find scoring chances. Quick hands. Will take a hit to make a play.

Weaknesses: Casual player - effort level is never there. Tends to stick to the perimeter.

One of the best natural goal scorers in the draft. I'd like him a lot more if he ever broke a sweat. Skating seems alright, but almost never uses what speed he has. I'll say one thing for him, he's not scared. I'd rather have a lazy player than a scared one.

Summary: Light a fire under him and you might have a 1st/2nd line scorer.

Target/Want: Would think about him late in the 1st if other players I like are gone. Hard to find this kind of scoring touch late in the 1st.

Teubert, Colten - D - Regina
Colten Teubert / Regina Pats WHL
D-R / 6-3.5, 185 / 08-Mar-1990

Skating: 75 / Skill: 60 / Sense: 55 / Compete: 65 / Tough: 70

Strengths: Terrific skater. Angry, mean, and wants to hurt opponents.

Weaknesses: Will need to learn to play more positionally sound in d-zone. Not as much progress offensively as I'd hoped this season.

Competes physically. You can't teach the kind of aggressiveness he has. Very good strength despite slight build, should get even stronger. Underrated puck skill. Needs to improve defensive reads, especially in transition. Aggressive style leads to a lot of chasing in d-zone. Some have questioned his hockey sense, but I don't see a problem with it.

Summary: Big, aggressive defender who can skate = very good NHLer.

Target/Want: Forget pounding a fist on the table, I'd flip the whole table over to get this guy. I love this player. He should go about 8th overall, but will probably slip until the teens.

Yes Eberle got off to a great start but if you look at the teams we started the season off against we played PA what like 5 times during the 1st 12 games plus throw Red Deer, and Edmonton plus MJ (when they really struggled at the begining of the season) Eberle came into the season as a guy who could score but at 17 i dont think was taken very seriously, then he scored 13 goals in 14 games and people were like wow this guy can score better put our top defenceman on this guy.

Then yes he did struggle as the Pats didnt have anyone else who could score on any shift (actually we never did have another guy) Eberle fought thru it all season and scored 42 goals as a 17 year old on a team that had only 1 other 20 goal scorer who happened to be a defencemen named Pyett (plus Pyett was gone for almost a month for the WJC) Eberle is the next best pure goal scorer outside of Stamkos, reading in the Hockey News they have Eberle as a better goal scorer then Boychuk. Hockey News says its a flip of a coin between Eberle and Boychuk depends on what you want between the 2.

I can almost guarentee that Boychuk will go before Eberle.

Perhaps Jordan has better offensive skill, but Boychuk has a far more complete game, with much more experience having been to many international tournaments, and more recently, a pretty good playoff run to add to his resume.

Not a slight against Eberle though. Remember Boychuk is also older by a year.

McGuire's comments on Eberle

I think the Oilers have to look for offence and Jordan Eberle is one of those players who is not too fast but gets it done. He's got that thing I like to call escapability, and he's a pure scorer - plus Edmonton loves to take guys from the WHL.

Big, mean, competes and most importantly.......................can skate...........You can't teach any of that. Tuebert will go early to mid first round.
Eberle is a wild card. 42 goals is hard to sneeze at but like I said, can't teach skating and compete and he may lack both. Anywhere from a surprise 15th to 40th is my guess.

Memorable day at the draft for Pats' Teubert, Eberle (http://www.reginapats.com/News/334/)

Memorable day at the draft for Pats' Teubert, Eberle

Greg Harder, Leader-Post
Published: Saturday, June 21, 2008

Jordan Eberle knows divine intervention when he sees it.

A childhood dream became reality when the Edmonton Oilers -- Eberle's favourite team -- selected him in the first round (22nd overall) of Friday's NHL entry draft in Ottawa.

Before calling Eberle to the podium, Oilers great Glenn Anderson made a tearful speech dedicating the pick to long-time scout Lorne Davis, who died of cancer on Dec. 20.

Anderson is regarded as one of the greatest finds by Davis, who was instrumental in stocking the NHL club with talent during its dynasty years in the 1980s. Davis, a Regina native, was a former player and coach with the WHL's Regina Pats, Eberle's current team.

This was Edmonton's first draft without Davis in 30 years. The Oilers left his seat at the draft table empty. Eberle said afterwards he'd like to think the legendary scout reached down from above and pointed the Oilers in his direction.

"I sure hope so," Eberle said from Ottawa. "It's obviously special for me, growing up on the same street as Lorne's son Darrell and (his wife) Eva.

"I've played street hockey with their sons (Austin and Tanner) and my brother is best friends with one of their sons.

"We've know their family forever. It's kind of special in that way, and growing up watching the Pats and knowing about Lorne Davis. To be dedicated in his honour is amazing."

Eberle couldn't have written the script any better himself.

"The Oilers have been my favourite team for as long as I've been alive," noted the shifty sniper, who's expected to fit in well with Edmonton's aggressive style.

"I kind of knew they had interest. Once the 22nd pick came around I was crossing my fingers. In a perfect world that was always the dream pick."

Eberle's enthusiasm was shared by teammate Colten Teubert, who was taken 13th overall by the L.A. Kings, making him the Pats' highest selection since Brad Stuart went third overall to the San Jose Sharks in 1998.

"It's amazing; I've never been happier," said Teubert, adding that he had never been so nervous in his life. "L.A. has a great young D core. I'm looking forward to the future with them."

The Kings ended up selecting at No. 13 after some previous wheeling and dealing. L.A. started the day by acquiring the 17th pick from the Calgary Flames, along with a second-rounder, for left-winger Mike Cammalleri.

The Kings then added the 12th pick from the Anaheim Ducks for No. 17 and No. 28. They then flipped the 12th pick to the Buffalo Sabres for No. 13 and a third-rounder in 2009.

Much like Eberle's selection, Teubert figures it was meant to be.

"As long as I got picked I'd be happy and it just so happened 13 was my lucky number," the hard-nosed defenceman said with a laugh.

"It's kind of weird. I've got the purple shirt on, silver tie. It matches the jersey great."

It wasn't just a great day for Teubert and Eberle, it was also a great day for the Pats.

The last time Regina had two players taken in the first round of the NHL entry draft was 1996 when Josh Holden was chosen 12th by the Vancouver Canucks, followed by Derek Morris to the Flames at No. 13.

"It just goes to show the scouting that we have," observed Eberle, adding that he was just as excited for Teubert as he was for himself.

"We're real close friends. We've been through everything together. I was kind of wondering if we were going to get picked to the same team there for a bit. I'm so proud of him. He has earned everything he has got."

The Pats' record for NHL first-rounders in one year was three in 1989: Mike Sillinger (11th, Detroit), Kevin Haller (14th, Buffalo) and Jamie Heward (16th, Pittsburgh).

Rounds 2 through 7 of the draft are to take place today. Pats defenceman Matt Delahey is the team's top prospect for Day 2.

REGINA'S TEUBERT RELISHES ROUGH STUFF

If there's one sure thing about bruising defenseman Colten Teubert, it's that he'll never sugar-coat his desire to play the body.

At 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, Teubert, the No. 18-rated North American skater by Central Scouting, doesn't need to take a back seat to anyone and he knows it.

"Coaches and scouts see Colten as a throwback or old-school defenseman, which is a good thing," said B.J. MacDonald, who scouts Western Canada for NHL Central Scouting. "He's physical, sometimes unpredictable, nasty and hard to play against -- qualities any team would love to have."

In fact, if you closed your eyes and listened to Teubert describe his playing style, you would swear a menacing defensemen of the 1970s was standing before you.

"I consider myself a punishing defender," he said. "I'm that guy that you put out against the top players and tell me to shut them down. I think the physical aspect of my game is one of my strengths and I will look to use that to my advantage. I think there are two punishing defensemen in this draft -- myself and (Kelowna's) Luke Schenn. But there are also skilled defenders. I feel in today's game you need physical, fast D-men in your own end and I can bring that."

Some players may consider getting a quick shift as a good way to gain a feel for the game. Teubert, though, isn't one of them.

"Either a big hit or getting hit gets me into the game," he said. "I think laying a big hit is better, but if you get hit, you realize, 'Oh, I've got to step up my game, I've got to start playing better and moving my feet.' That's what gets me going."

In addition to representing Canada at the 2008 Under-18 World Championships, Teubert was a member of Team Canada at the Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August 2007 and represented Team British Columbia at the 2007 Canada Winter Games. He was third among Regina Pats defensemen with 23 points, including seven goals, and he added 135 penalty minutes in 66 games this past season.

"I just want to be a shut-down guy," Teubert said. "I try to throw some offense in here and there, but definitely just blocking shots and playing physical and setting the tone for the game."

Teubert was part of an impressive corps of defensemen at Regina, including Nick Ross, a Phoenix Coyotes prospect; Detroit draft pick Logan Pyett; and Matt Delahey, who is rated 67th among North American skaters on Central Scouting's list.

"Colten not only has the skills, but he's got character and he really sticks up for his guys, is mean and works very hard," said Delahey, who was paired with Teubert at Regina. "I can't tell you if he's NHL-ready, but I can say he's one of the best junior hockey players out there, no doubt."

Teubert also joined forces with Central Scouting's No. 75-ranked North American skater, Travis Hamonic, on the Canadian team that competed in the World Under-18 Championships in Kazan, Russia, in April.

"Our styles are a little bit different, but we resemble each other in that we both play hard," Hamonic told NHL.com. "We're the two biggest rivals right now since I'm with Moose Jaw and Colten's with Regina, but it was nice to have the opportunity to play with him."

Teubert's motivation is the fear of losing.

"I hate to lose," he said. "Just the emotion of the game and knowing that guy stands in my way from winning pushes me to either knocking him down or shutting him down."

E.J. McGuire, the NHL's Director of Central Scouting, doesn't see any reason why Teubert couldn't be a mid- to late first-round selection at the NHL Entry Draft, to be held June 20-21 in Ottawa.

"Colten is a smooth-skating defenseman who can skate the puck out of trouble and can jump up the ice with the puck," McGuire said. "I like Colten for a lot of reasons, but most of all for his ability to take charge of the game. He projects as a support (No.) 3 or 4 defenseman, at least initially in the NHL, with a good offensive upside who won't hurt you on defense."

MacDonald also sees great potential in the 18-year-old native of White Rock, British Columbia.

"He's a stay-at-home guy and tough in front of his own net," MacDonald told NHL.com. "He has developed a much better sense on when to be forceful and when to lay off a little. His type of style is harder to find over the last number of years because of the rule changes, and with more experience he'll learn to have better defensive reads and positioning. He could go even higher (than late first round), depending on if a team feels the need for his style."

Prior to being selected first overall by Regina at the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft, Teubert played for the Semiahmoo Ravens bantam AAA team, where he had 26 goals, 26 assists and 166 penalty minutes in 65 games in 2004-05.

"The (WHL) draft was so long ago, I can barely remember it, but it was obviously a highlight to that point in my life," Teubert said. "But all that's said and done now and there's a new draft and I've got to be focused and ready to play and press for this draft."
