CHIEFS TRADE ARMSTRONG TO PRINCE GEORGE
7/2/2008

The Spokane Chiefs have traded goaltender Kevin Armstrong to the Prince George Cougars in exchange for a fourth round draft selection in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft.

“Kevin is a good goaltender who deserves an opportunity to play his 20-year-old season in the WHL,” Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said. “With the success that Dustin Tokarski has had it is clear he will be our starting goaltender next year and with the experience James Reid acquired last year he is ready to be our second netminder.”

In two-and-a-half seasons in Spokane, Armstrong won 51 games, including a 20-5-1-3 record last year. In 33 games, the Winnipeg, Manitoba native set a career low goals against average of 2.17 and a career high .915 save percentage, both second best in franchise history. Armstrong was originally acquired from the Saskatoon Blades in January, 2006 and in three full seasons in the league he has played 129 games with 65 career wins.

“We want to wish Kevin the best and thank him for his contributions and commitment to our Memorial Cup Championship team,” Speltz said.

Not surprising in the least...in fact I even thought it would probably be Prince George. I would like to wish Kevin the best of luck there; it's not going to be an easy task to backstop that Cougars team next season. Armstrong does indeed deserve to be a starter in this league, especially in his 20 year old season. Hopefully he gains some valuable experience and proves how competent a goaltender he is and earns a pro contract for himself. Speltz got alot back for an OA goaltender in a 4th round bantam pick, so that works out well for us also.

James Reid will provide a strong backup for Tokarski next season and gives us another promising young goaltender.

This leaves the Chiefs with 5 eligible 20 year old returnees:

Trevor Glass
Justin Falk
Justin McCrae
Curtis Kelner
Seth Compton

Glad to see he's going to a place where he'll get to close out his junior career as the number one tender. Hopefully he won't be on his game the 4 times they play Spokane though. :p

Good luck Army!
