Lets try to keep all the ice breaker tournament related info in this thread.

The pats' first tournament game ended today, with the pats beating the tigers 6-4. Kyle Mulder got a hat trick and Victor Bartley was dominant with a goal and four assists.

There was 2 fights in this game, so if anyone has fight recaps, feel free to share them. The rest of the game summary is on the whl website link above...somewhere on there.

Does anyone know the rosters that were dressed for the games? There is next to no coverage on these exhibition tournaments, though to be fair it has been better lately... they are actually showing box scores now.

Great to see Hricina getting 3 assists as well, shows he is adapting fast to the WHL, add Cerveny next week we should have some decent offence.

Bartley is going to be a stud this year in our conference, prob be top 3 defencemen in our conference forsure top 5.

Says Pats lost 5-4 but looking at the summary the Pats indeed won 5-4 over the Oil Kings.

Check out the summary..... Derkatch might just get his wish for one of the most penalized teams in the league.

YES KEVIN REGINA PATS DID WIN - 5-4 over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Jordan EBERLE, played and scored 2 goals and had 1 assist. Pats led 2-1 after the frist period and upped the score to 4-1 after the second period.

The Edmonton Oil Kings went postal for their second game of their Pre-Season Invitational. Unfortunately, that’s not a good thing in hockey. Four Oil Kings hit the post and they threw everything they had at the Pats in the last 10 minutes but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell 5 – 4 to Regina Sunday night at Servus Credit Union Place in St. Albert. What a finish. The home squad rallied with 3 goals in the last 2:13 and there was a line brawl with just 51 seconds to go in what was clearly the most entertaining hockey game of the Oil Kings tournament so far.

“It was really exciting.” described Oil Kings bruising defenceman Adrian Van de Mosselaer who scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the final flurry. “We just stuck to our game and kept banging away and went towards the net and the last minute got pretty exciting.”

Van de Mossealaer was on the ice for the last minute and just missed his hat trick on a mad scramble in front. Not bad for a guy that scored in his first WHL regular season game last year and hasn’t scored since in 52 games. As for the line brawl at the end, the 6’2, 215 pound Kelowna resident says that’ll go a long way towards team building.

“(Cameron) Cepek stepped up and we all stepped up today. It was good to see Robin (Soudek) get his first fight in and he did very good. It’s good to know that guys aren’t afraid to step up to the plate when the game gets a little messy.”

Some might say it was a Rocky Thompson type game.

“I wouldn’t say that.” the Oil Kings assistant coach quickly pointed out. “But it was nice to see our guys at the end there just sticking up for each other. You could see that Regina was trying to take advantage of us throughout the game and I thought our guys responded well at the end. I truly think a lot of our guys not only surprised Regina but maybe even surprised themselves.”
Oil Kings 18-year-old goalie Dalyn Flette looked solid as the starter for Edmonton. He played just over 30 minutes and made 11 saves on 13 shots. The Calgary native’s best save was his last robbing Brett Breitkreuz’s little brother Clarke on a clear cut breakaway from the red line and in courtesy of a terrific pass from Pats winger Garrett Mitchell. That’s the first time the Breitzkreuz brothers have had to play a competitive game of hockey against each other. Older brother Brett finished with a goal and an assist but admits younger brother Clarke gets the bragging rights after scoring the game winner.
“We’ve been on the same team and even on the same line until I went to play Pee Wee AA, and we haven’t played together since. It was a little different, that’s for sure. He still got the same winner. I didn’t know who to cheer for on his breakaway. He can score a hat trick and we can win 4 – 3 and I’d take that every night.”

Brent Raedeke rounded out the scoring for the Oil Kings. Koltyn Miller opened the scoring for the Pats and then Edmonton Oilers 1st round, 22nd overall draft pick Jordan Eberle stole the show from there with a pair of goals and an assist. Matt Streuby added a single for the Pats.

Regina will play one more game in this tournament at 3:00 p.m. on Monday against the Prince George Cougars. Edmonton will close out the tournament in the 7 o’clock game against the Medicine Hat Tigers.

That box score confuses me.

17:36 – EDM Penalty – 7 Cameron Cepek 5:00 Fighting, Game Misconduct

19:09 –EDM Penalty - 7 Cameron Cepek 5:00 Fighting, Game Misconduct

On the Oil Kings website it also mentions that Brett Breitkreuz and Colten Teubert fought yet Breitkreuz didn't even receive a fighting major.

Normally that would be fine. But with the automatic game misconduct in regards to fighting during the preseason that still doesn't make sense.

Thanks.Looking at the summary I believe that when an Instigator penalty is issued the opponent doesn't receive the game misconduct penalty.

The penalties issued at 17:36 were:

Cepek Fight
Hanson Instigator, Fight, GM

It also happened earlier in the game as well..... Henke (Edmonton) got the Instigator when he fought Delahey..... Delahey didn't get the boot. Also later in the game's final minute where 2 Pats received Instigator minors and 2 Oil Kings fought but didn't get ejected (a GM).

Also with the Teubert scrap.... as he got an Instigator penalty he either fought Raedeke or Neigum (as neither one received Game Misconduct's). Scorekeepers (in most cases) usually don't put combatants in the order they fought (or in groups), they put them in the order the referee tells them the penalties.

By looking at that box score that would make sense. However in every other preseason game I've attended (or other box scores I've read) it doesn't seem to matter whether an instigator penalty was handed out or not. To my knowledge any fighting major during the preseason came with an automatic game misconduct.

Preseason sweep for Pats

Dale Derkatch is still undefeated as the new head coach of the Regina Pats.
Scott Doucet had a goal and an assist on Monday, leading the Pats to a 4-2 win over the Prince George Cougars at a preseason tournament in Edmonton.
Regina won the tournament with a 3-0 record, also posting a 6-4 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers and a 5-4 decision against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Derkatch, the Pats' all-time leading scorer, was making his debut behind Regina's bench after being hired this summer to replace Curtis Hunt, now an assistant with the Ottawa Senators.
Derkatch got plenty of help from defenceman Victor Bartley, who had three assists on Monday to give him a goal and seven helpers in just two games.
Rookie hopefuls Graham Hood, Jeff Dort and Koltyn Miller had Regina's other goals. Damien Ketlo stopped 14 of 16 shots. Derek Tendler turned aside all 14 he faces in relief.
Regina still has four preseason games remaining — a home-and-home series against the Brandon Wheat Kings and Saskatoon Blades, respectively. The Pats visit Brandon on Friday and make their home preseason debut on Saturday against the Wheat Kings.
Here's the scoring summary from Monday's game, courtesy of new Pats PR man Dan Plaster:

Although Regina Pats won the Edmonton Tournament over the weekend, there were way to many penalties and fights (a grand total of 10 fights in 3 games). Yes, I know some of you love fights and some will say the players are fighting for postion on the club.

I for one, do not like a lot of penalties and am totally against fighting. I like Dale Derkatch very much but hope this fighting, and resulting penalties, does not continue throughout the season. A player in a penalty box is incapable of helping the team win a game! They can't show their skill at playing hockey sitting on their butts in a penalty box.

They could take the example of Ron Garwasiuk in 1969, when the opposing team tried to take him out of the game by sending their top fighter after him. Knowing that if he gave in to fighting the Pats could lose what was an important playoff game, he just fell to the ice, curled up into a ball, and refused to participate. The opposing player received a five minute penalty and we went on to score two goals and won the series. To this day I hold "Garby" in high respect for what he did. He went on to record 63 points in the playoffs that season which is still a Regina Pats Club record.

Well Derketch has stated that he wasnts to be in the to 5 in PIM in the league, shows that his team is competeing night in and night out. As for the fighting, fighting has its place in hockey no matter what anyone says. Stand up for yourself or teammates cause the ref's can only protect you so much. Make a player think twice about throwing the big bone crunching hit knowing that he may have to fight a Tuebert, Grantham, Bendfeld. As much as you dont like it the fighting sells tickets and gives the players there right to police themselves or teammates. Its like standing up for your buddy or little brother who isnt a fighter but gets picked on in some shape or form.
