No real surprises about Hill and DePape. I think most disappointing is DePape. His strong showing in 06-07 when he was with PA didn't translate into further success the next year.

Now you would think that Elder's time is up also. Doucet, MacAngus and Bartley have pretty much locked up their positions on the team.

Pats moves

The Regina Pats announced five player moves on Wednesday afternoon — and more are likely on the way.
It appears that GM Brent Parker is getting closer to pulling off a trade or two (see post below) as he looks to settle some lingering questions about his team's roster before the start of the regular season.
Parker answered one of those questions early in the day by releasing 20-year-old forwards Ryan DePape and Kirt Hill. Those moves confirm what has been reported here all along, that (barring a trade) LW Michael MacAngus, C Scott Doucet and D Victor Bartley would end up as the team's three 20-year-olds. The only remaining question is regarding LW Josh Elder, who's still dealing with a knee problem. The Pats will take care of his injury before finding him a new home.
Parker is still hoping to work out a trade for DePape and Hill, whose rights are retained by the Pats. If a deal can't be worked out, they'd be placed on waivers and would become free agents. DePape's value is low given the fact that he was a bust after being acquired at last year's trade deadline for LW Jared Jagow and a third-round bantam pick in 2008. In retrospect, that's obviously a deal Parker would like to have back.
The Pats might have been able to find a suitor for Hill, but Parker's hands were tied when he suffered a severely broken thumb during the Blue & White game.
“We knew this day was going to come with our overage situation, and we felt that the sooner we made the decision the better it would be for Ryan and Kirt,” Parker said in a prepared statement. “Doing it now will hopefully give them the opportunity to catch on with another WHL team. We thank them both for their efforts and wish them all the best."
The Pats also re-assigned three players to the midget AAA ranks: D Tyler Borstmayer, 15 (Tisdale Trojans), D Travis Sparrow, 17 (Moose Jaw Warriors) and F Andrew Rieder, 16 (Regina Pat Canadians).
“All three of the young guys played well and are a part of our future plans," said Parker. "One more year of development will be good for them all."
The Pats are now down to 28 players (excluding Elder): Four goalies, 15 forwards and nine defencemen. More cuts are not imminent since five players will leave soon for NHL camps: D Colten Teubert, D Matt Delahey, RW Brett Leffler, RW Jordan Eberle and G Linden Rowat. While they're gone, Regina will need to maintain its current numbers in order to ice a full lineup.

As the rumour mill churns

Regina Pats GM Brent Parker paid a visit to Everett on the weekend to scout a preseason tournament hosted by the Silvertips.
The ’Tips are reportedly keeping their eyes open for a starting netminder to replace Leland Irving. The team’s current goalies are Regina product Shayne Barrie, who was a backup last season, and top prospect Kent Simpson, who’s only 16. If the unproven Barrie isn’t the answer, Everett will need someone to take over until Simpson is ready for primetime. As luck would have it, the Pats have four WHL-calibre netminders in camp — veterans Linden Rowat and Jeff Bosch and rookies Damien Ketlo and Derek Tendler — and will be looking to move at least one of them in the coming weeks.
The Silvertips are also in the market for a 20-year-old forward. Regina has five of them: Michael MacAngus, Ryan DePape, Kirt Hill (who’s injured), Scott Doucet and Josh Elder (who’s also injured).
Do you suppose Parker and Everett GM Doug Soetaert, long-time friends, might be able to consummate a deal?
Just thought it was worth mentioning.

The Silvertips are shaping up to be one of the WHL’s youngest teams this season. They got a little younger on the weekend when defenceman Tyler Kieffer, 20, and LW Jordan Mistelbacher, 18, were sent home due to undisclosed discipline issues.
Kieffer, a 5-foot-11, 210-pounder, had three assists in 27 games Everett last season, his first in the WHL. Mistelbacher, who’s 6-foot-2, 209 pounds, had 10 goals and 10 assists in 67 games.
Would Mistelbacher be a fit for the Pats? That remains to be seen, depending in part on the reason he was sent home, but Regina could undoubtedly use some help at left wing. Michael MacAngus, Rudolf Cerveny, Tomas Hricina and Graham Hood are the only true left wingers on the current depth chart.

Calgary Hitmen GM Kelly Kisio seems puzzled by a trade demand from D Alex Plante, a first-round pick (15th overall) of the Edmonton Oilers in 2007. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder had just one goal and one assist in 36 games during an injury-shortened campaign in 2007-08. The year before, he had eight goals and 38 points in 58 contests.
“You sit back and scratch your head and wonder what you have to do to make kids happy,” Kisio told the Calgary Herald. “We played him with Karl Alzner so he could have a big draft year, then he gets hurt and has trouble getting back into game shape and we're getting blamed for it.”
The Edmonton Oil Kings reportedly expressed interest in Plante, 19, but backed off because the price was too high. Plante would be a nice fit for the Pats, whose best bargaining chip is in goal. If the price drops to a reasonable level, look for Regina to get involved.
The other hot rumour has Plante ending up in Brandon, his home town. The Wheat Kings are deep and talented, but they could use some veteran help on the back end. The acquisition of Plante could put Brandon over the top in the East Division. It could also help propel the Pats into the thick of the race.
Stay tuned.
