Brandon, Manitoba -- The Wheat Kings kicked off their 4-game Western Hockey League pre-season schedule on a winning note Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place.

Scott Glennie's powerplay goal with fourteen seconds remaining in the second period lifted Brandon to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Regina Pats.
After jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Brodie Melnychuk and Matt Lowry, the Wheat Kings saw their lead evaporate in the second when the Pats fired two goals in a span of two minutes. That set the stage for Glennie's game winner, on a pretty cross crease pass from Jay Fehr.

Brandon goalkeepers Graham Hildebrand and Joe Caligiuri combined to make 37 saves for the Wheat Kings, who travel to Regina for the second of a weekend home and home series on Saturday night.

Dallas Jackson and Jordan Weal scored goals in a losing cause for the Pats, who outshot Brandon 39-28.

Brandon's lineup Friday night included veterans Caligiuri, Melnychuk, Lowry, Glennie, Fehr, Colby Robak, Chad Erb, Del Cowan, Cale Jefferies, Jordan Hale and Alexander Grill Donovan.

The rookies included Hildebrand, Brendan Rouse, Paul Ciarelli, Brett Rock, Jesse Sinatynski, Ryley Miller, Jordan DePape, Jesse Hall and Mark Stone.

I GET THE FEALING EVERYONE THAT WAS AT GAME LAST NIGHT, WERE NOT IMPRESSED WITH THE GAME, JUST LIKE I WAS. PATS ONLY PLAYED UP TO PAR A FEW TIMES IN THE SECOND PERIOD WHEN THEY OUT SHOT BRANDON.

IN THE THIRD PERIOD, TWO DISALLOWED GOALS BY THE REFEREE. - ONE FOR WHEN THE GOAL MESH WAS OFF THE PEG! WHEN DID IT COME OFF AND WHEN DID THEY PUT IT BACK ON! ALSO WHEN HE BLEW THE WHISTLE, BEFORE THE PUCK WENT INTO THE NET. THE REFEREE WAS IN A GOOD PLACE TO SEE THAT PUCK.

Well as much as the ref was a little frustrating at times thru out the game, the 1st goal that was waved off, #22 for Brandon bumped the net (about 20 seconds before the puck went in) Byblow almost blew it down but the net fell back down onto the ice and looked like it was in place. After the goal Byblow seen the net wasnt on properly so waved it off... 99% of the time when a play like that happens no team scores and the ref gets the goalie to fix the net as the puck goes down the ice the other way, but this 1% the team ends up scoring to wave the goal off in my eyes isnt right, the ref makes a judgment call saying the net fell back into its right place therefore if a goal goes in he has to stand behind his judgment.

As for the 2nd waved off goal he did blow the whisle before the puck entered the net, he made the right call by waving it off. Do i agree with it, no cuz it was a very quick whisle but he made his call and stood behind it, even tho he missed a clear interference call in the neutral zone as the pats came in on the rush, and Hood was knocked on his @ss wiht the puck no where around him. Lets hope Byblow uses this preseason game as a work in progress for him too lol he was also babysitting 2 linesmen who were prob the same age as the players if not younger.

Its only preseason the games are used to evaluate the players the wins & losses dont count anyways cuz come sept 18th (the day the season starts) everyone starts off 0-0-0-0

GO PATS GO!!!!!!
