Looks like Jordan White had a respectable outing going until the last two minutes when the dam burst. Nice to see the young guys contributing. A bit late but hey --here it is anyway.

Giants Whitewash Winterhawks
Vancouver 5 Portland 0

Don Robinson

After dominating the Cougars in their home opener, The Giants travelled down South to take on the Portland Winterhawks at the Memorial Coliseum. The G-Men were hoping to continue their current roll in the second of three, back to back to back games. Jamie Tucker got his third start of the young season and out of three games he has two shut-outs. The Giants relied upon their young guns in Portland as Piluso, Basford and Gallagher all found their way onto the score sheet. A paltry 2500 fans were in the stands for the blow-out as the once storied successful Portland franchise mired in problems with their ownership group and continue to be behind the eight ball being poorly mismanaged. Back-up goalie Jordan White got the call in net for the home team.

Adam Basford opened the scoring in Portland with his first of the season. James Henry and Neil Manning got the assists. The Giants weathered a couple of penalties against in the first, seemingly getting their PK train back on the track.

Mike Piluso added to the lead in the second with his first of two on the night and his third goal of the young campaign. James Wright and Brendan Gallagher garnered the assists on the play. The second ended with the Giants leading 2-0 and the Winterhawks still in the game, but it would be very late in third that the flood gates would open.

The Winterhawks managed to maintain the staus quo in the third until a penalty late in the final frame signalled an onslaught. Within the final two minutes of the game the Giants put three past Jordan White for what looked to be far more of a lop-sided victory than it was for the majority of the tilt. Piluso scored his second of the game on the Giants only PP tally of the game. CPZ and Evander Kane were awarded the assists. Less than forty seconds later Brendan Gallagher got his second of the campaign, with Wright and Andrej Kudrna getting the helpers. Just over thirty seconds after that Lance Bouma got his second of the season with the assists going to Craig Cunningham and Henry.

The Giants went 1 for 4 on the PP, while holding their opponent to 0 for 6. The visitors out shot the Winterhawks 35 – 19. The Giants are finding scoring from some unexpected sources as their young players are solidifying their place on the roster with some impressive outings, giving the Vancouver squad a deeper scoring team than originally anticipated and a far more taxing task for their opponents. The Giants head back up the road to take on Chilliwack Sunday afternoon, September 28th. The puck drops at Prospera Centre at 5pm PST.
