Monday notes . . .
The NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes have assigned F Zach Boychuk, who turned 19 on Oct. 4, to the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Boychuk was the 14th overall selection in the NHL’s 2008 draft. He underwent offseason surgery on a wrist, but got into two games with Carolina — Friday at Los Angeles and Sunday at Anaheim. He played 9:21 in a 4-3 overtime loss in L.A., and 14:45 in a 3-1 victory in Anaheim. Boychuk had 72 points, including 33 goals, in 61 games with Lethbridge last season. . . . The Hurricanes weren’t sure late Monday whether Boychuk would play Tuesday against the visiting Prince George Cougars.

Saskatoon Blades LW Curtis Hamilton (knee) will miss as much as six weeks after being injured Wednesday in Swift Current. Hamilton, the 17-year-old son of Kelowna Rockets governor/general manager Bruce Hamilton, ended up with ligament damage. He returned home and the damage was discovered in an MRI on Friday. He had 11 points in 12 games and was a plus-6. His spot on a line with Chris Langkow and Travis Toomey likely will go to Adam Chorneyko, 20, who was acquired Thursday from Lethbridge.

Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post is reporting that the Regina Pats have dropped C Scott Doucet, 20, “for disciplinary reasons.” According to Harder, “Doucet was released Monday due to insubordination stemming from an apparent difference of opinion with the Pats’ brass.” He had 14 points in 13 games.

JUST NOTES: The Portland Winter Hawks continue their eastern swing Tuesday when they meet the Prince Albert Raiders, who are just back from a B.C. swing on which they went 2-4. The Winter Hawks may have LW Ryan Andersen, an 18-year-old freshman from Wainwright, Alta., in the lineup as he is about ready to return from a shoulder injury. . . . The Winter Hawks likely won’t have RW Blair Macaulay in their lineup, however, Macaulay, who was picked up in the 20-year-old draft Thursday after he was dropped by the Tri-City Americans, hasn’t yet reported to Portland. . . . On the subject of not reporting: Whatever happened to D Tyler Kieffer? The 19-year-old was traded by the Everett Silvertips to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Sept. 11. Brown, 19, reported to the Silvertips; Kieffer, however, never showed up in Medicine Hat. . . . The Washington Capitals have signed G Braden Holtby of the Saskatoon Blades to a three-year NHL contract. Holtby, 19, was a fourth-round pick by the Caps in the NHL’s 2008 draft.
The Boston Pizza player of the week is Brandon Wheat Kings C Jay Fehr, who had nine points, including five goals, as his club went 2-0-1-0 last week. His week’s work included back-to-back four-point games. . . . Martin Jones of the Calgary Hitmen is the WHL’s nominee as the ADT CHL goaltender of the week. He was 3-0-0-0 with a shutout. . . . Dave Sheldon, the voice of the Vancouver Giants, points out that the Giants, who have opened 7-0-0-3, are 36-6-3-5 in their first 10 games over the last five seasons.

Left over from Sunday . . . In the day’s lone game, D Paul Postma had a goal and two assists, leading the visiting Calgary Hitmen to a 7-2 victory over the Hitmen. . . . Postma also was plus-5, while Calgary D Michael Stone, who had two goals and an assist, was plus-4. . . . Edmonton F Logan Proulx scored his first WHL goal on a shorthanded penalty shot in the third period.
