FRIDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS:
In Kennewick, Wash., D Tyler Schmidt scored the game’s only goal as the Tri-City Americans edged the Everett Silvertips, 1-0. . . . The Americans (10-3-0-0) have won five in a row. They are 5-0 at home. . . . The Silvertips (6-5-1-0) had won their last three and four of their last five. . . . G Chet Pickard stopped 20 shots for his first shutout of the season and seventh of his career. . . . Pickard stopped RW Shane Harper on a penalty shot at 6:14 of the third period. . . . Everett G Shayne Barrie stopped 46 shots. . . . Everett has been shut out three times this season. . . . The victory lifted the Americans into first place in the U.S. Division, one point ahead of the Spokane Chiefs. . . . Schmidt’s goal, his second of the season, came on the PP at 14:55 of the second period. . . . Tri-City captain Taylor Procyshen played in his 200th regular-season game. . . . The Americans were without D Eric Mestery (knee). . . . Everett D Mike Alexander left in the middle of the second period after injuring his left ankle. He is to be re-evaluated today.

In Spokane, the Seattle Thunderbirds struck for three third-period goals and beat the Chiefs, 3-2. . . . The Thunderbirds (3-9-0-1) had lost four straight. . . . The Chiefs (8-2-0-3) had been 8-0-0-3 since opening night when they lost 4-2 to the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook. . . . Spokane had taken a 2-0 lead on a second-period goal by C Tyler Johnson and a score by F Ryan Letts at 1:11 of the third. . . . F Prab Rai (4:44), F Lindsay Nielsen (shorthanded, 8:02) and F Brenden Silvester (14:17) pulled it out of the fire for Seattle. . . . The winner was Silvester’s first goal of his sophomore season. He had two goals in 52 games last season. . . . Seattle G Jacob DeSerres stopped 28 shots, five fewer than Spokane’s Dustin Tokarski. . . . The Thunderbirds are at home to the Everett Silvertips on Saturday. It will be Everett’s last visit to KeyArena, where it is 4-18-0-1 with three ties, according to the Everett Herald’s Nick Patterson.

In Swift Current, F Jeff Lee had two goals to help the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 5-2 victory over the Broncos. . . . The Oil Kings (6-9-1-0) had lost four in a row. . . . The Broncos (9-5-0-0) have lost three of four. . . . F Brent Raedeke had a goal and two assists for Edmonton. . . . Swift Current G Mark Guggenberger was lifted late in the second period after giving up four goals on 22 shots. He was replaced by Travis Yonkman, who had been sidelined with a shoulder injury. . . . G Torrie Jung, acquired earlier in the week from the Lethbridge Hurricanes, stopped 27 shots in his first start for Edmonton. Lethbridge had acquired him from the Kelowna Rockets, but he never got into a game with the Hurricanes before he was traded again.

In Regina, the Pats scored the game’s last four goals and beat the Portland Winter Hawks, 5-3. . . . The Pats (7-5-1-2) had lost their last two, giving up 14 goals in the process. . . . The Winter Hawks (2-11-0-0) had ended a nine-game losing streak with a 4-3 OT victory over the Blades in Saskatoon on Wednesday. . . . Portland G Keith Hamilton, who beat Saskatoon in his first WHL appearance, stopped 37 shots. . . . The Winter Hawks, who scored the game’s first two goals in the first period, led 3-1 at 3:12 of the second period before the roof fell in. . . . RW Killian Hutt had two assists for Portland after setting up three goals in Saskatoon. . . . C Scott Doucet, a 20-year-old released early in the week by the Pats, now is with the SJHL’s Estevan Bruins.

In Red Deer, the Rebels scored the game’s first two goals but trailed 3-2 after the first period en route to a 6-3 loss at the hands of the Vancouver Giants. . . . Vancouver (9-0-0-3) remains the only WHL team not to have lost in regulation time. . . . The Rebels (4-7-0-5) have lost three in a row and 10 of 11. . . . After falling behind 2-0, Vancouver head coach Don Hay used his timeout, directed a few words at his boys and they then struck for five straight goals. . . . The victory was the 397th of Hay’s WHL head-coaching career. . . . Vancouver F Evander Kane had one assist and teammate Casey Pierro-Zabotel had two as each ran their point streaks to 12 games. . . . They lead the WHL scoring race, each with 24 points. . . . Kane even found time to get into a scrap with Red Deer sniper Landon Ferraro. . . . Red Deer had F Connor Redmond in the lineup after a long absence with a shoulder injury.

In Cranbrook, F Kevin King had a goal and three assists to help the Kootenay Ice to a 6-3 victory over the Prince George Cougars. . . . The Ice (8-5-1-3) has won five straight. . . . The Cougars (7-8-0-0) have lost four in a row and are 1-7 on a nine-game road trip that concludes Saturday night in Spokane. . . . Prince George, which started the season 6-1, is under .500 for the first time this season. . . . The Cougars led this one 2-0 in the middle of the first period on goals five seconds apart by F Dana Tyrell, his 11th, and F Parker Stanfield. The WHL record, by the way, is two seconds. Yes, two seconds. . . . But the Ice got PP goals from F Dominik Pascovsky and F Matt Fraser before the first period ended and won it with three second-period goals. . . . F Brett Connolly, 16, had a goal and an assist for the Cougars. He has been a real bright spot for Prince George.

In Kelowna, C Colin Long, named team captain on Thursday, and LW Jamie Benn each scored twice and G Adam Brown earned his second straight shutout as the Rockets dumped the Chilliwack Bruins, 6-0. . . . Kelowna (9-6-0-0) has won three in a row and six of eight. . . . The Bruins (5-7-1-1) have lost five straight. . . . Benn and Long added an assist each. They lead the WHL with 12 goals each. . . . Benn has nine goals and five assists in his last six games. . . . Chilliwack’s PP was 0-for-4 and now is 2-for-35 on the road. . . . Brown, a 17-year-old freshman from Yorba Linda, Calif., stopped 14 shots as he blanked the Bruins for the second straight game. He made 15 saves in a 5-0 victory on Wednesday. Brown, the son of Anaheim Ducks assistant coach Newell Brown, is 4-0 this season. . . . Kelowna had a 36-14 edge in shots. . . . The Bruins have been blanked three times this season.

In Calgary, F Brendan Rowinski had a goal and two assists as the Hitmen edged the Moose Jaw Warriors, 5-4. . . . Calgary (12-3-0-0) has won five in a row and has the WHL’s best record. . . . The Warriors (5-7-0-1) have lost five of six. . . . D Ryan Stanton had a goal and two assists for Moose Jaw. He later left the game with a suspected head injury and is listed as doubtful for a game in Red Deer on Saturday night. . . . The Warriors were 1-for-5 on the PP. Calgary’s penalty killers have allowed only four goals on 72 opportunities. . . . Moose Jaw F Ian Duval, who was acquired from Calgary earlier this month, scored in his second game with the Warriors. He had been out with mononucleosis.
