Regina Pats Take First Place as they downed Swift Current 5-1 in front of 4327 fans. It has to be close to a League Record as the game only took 2:06 hours.

It’s only a third through the season, but the first meeting between the Swift Current Broncos and the Regina Pats had the feel of a playoff game. These two have become quick rivals since meeting in back to back playoff series’ over the past two seasons, with the Pats winning in 2007, and the Broncos pulling off an upset in the 2008 post season.

It was the Broncos opening the scoring 8:33 into the first period, as Keegan Dansereau got passed the Pat defenceman and wired one by Linden Rowat for his 11th of the season. Under two minutes later, the Pats tied it up on some great forechecking. Mitch Czibere was able to dig the puck out of the Swift Current corner and out to Brett Leffler for his 9th of the season.

The second started with a fantastic give and go that was finished by Eberle for his 15th of the season to make it 2-1 Pats. The solid second period continued with a 5-on-3 Pats power play opportunity that saw Michael MacAngus bury on a nice cross-ice feed from Jordan Eberle, and it was a 3-1 lead after 4o minutes.

The fireworks continued in the third. After Derek Claffey laid out Jordan Eberle, Michael MacAngus took exception and dropped the mits with Claffey in an even tilt.

The Pats made it a 3 goal lead on a three-way passing play finished by Thomas Hricina, touching home his 4th of the season. The goal barrage saw Rudolf Cerveny get into the act half-way through the third, finishing off a goal-mouth scramble with his 5th of the season, that was the icing on the cake in a 5-1 Pats win.

It truly was a nice sight and a nicer feeling to have the crowd burst into several ovations for the Pats during Sunday night's game. Many of them were for fine work on the penalty kill, some were for the ginormous bodychecks and great Rowat saves, and the biggest was the roar when time ran out and the Pats had snatched first place away from their top rival.

Pats coach Dale Derkatch was similarly applauded when he appeared on CKRM's Molson Overtime Show, when he joined me down at ice level. Things are going great for the Pats under Derkatch, Perkins, Strueby, Cyr and Parker and they are fantastically entertaining. I'm so happy for them.
