The Kelowna Rockets have announced that Shane McColgan will make his WHL debut Tuesday December 16 in Red Deer.

McColgan was the Rockets first round draft pick, 13th overall, in the
2008 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

This season McColgan is playing with the Los Angeles Junior Kings. In
24 games he has recorded nine goals, 22 assists for 31 points and 34 penalty minutes.

McColgan was born January 1, 1993. He is a forward from Manhattan Beach, California and was the only US born player to be selected in the first round of this season's Bantam Draft.

Kings head coach Jack Bowkus says, "Shane is a pleasure to coach. He works hard every practice, every shift and every game. He plays his heart out and has the passion to become a pro. In the last year, he's really grown up and matured and has really become a heck of a hockey player."

Rockets President/General Manager Bruce Hamilton says, "There was a lot of debate prior to the Draft about whether we were willing to take the risk of him not coming to Kelowna. After Lorne Frey and Ryan Huska met with him at spring camp in California it became very evident that he would be a player that would commit to the Western Hockey League. So, yes it was a risk, but at the end of the day we have to pick the best player available. Once he is selected it's up to our staff to convince the player and his family that Kelowna and the WHL is the best place to pursue his hockey and education career. We are thrilled and are looking forward to him making his debut with the Kelowna Rockets organization."

McColgan and the Junior Kings will play in a tournament in Pittsburgh the weekend of December 11. Following the conclusion of that tournament, McColgan will fly to Edmonton and make his debut on December 16 in Red Deer. He will then travel with the Rockets back to Edmonton on December 17 for a game against the Oil Kings. Once the Junior Kings season closes, McColgan will join the Rockets for the remainder of the WHL season.

Any idea approx when the Junior Kings season closes? From the looks of their website, looks like their season is over in December:

The first link shows that they play 46 games with 2 home and 2 away inter division games as well as 6 showcases – each division hosting 3 showcases and travel to each others showcase once.

The second link has them playing in showcase games Feb 14-16. Don’t know the exact date they end the season, but they do play at least till mid Feb.

What I understand McColgan can only play 5 games anyway because of his age and 2 of the five will be played on the Alberta trip in Dec (someone correct me if I’m wrong) that only leaves him with 3 games after the Kings are done this season.

I understand he can play five games as an 'under-age player'. When the season ends with his existing team (LA Junior Kings), he can play as many games as he wants with the Rockets after that. So if - in an ideal world - the Rockets went to the Memorial Cup, McColgan can play.

- The Rockets practiced (Monday) afternoon at Rexall Place.
- Three new faces were on the ice working out with the team. Shane McColgan was joined by Brett Bulmer and Dillon Simpson. McColgan is the Rockets first round pick from this summer's draft while Simpson was selected in the 8th round. Bulmer was an 11th rounder in 2007. McColgan and Bulmer will play (Tuesday) night against the Rebels.
- Simpson is the son of former NHL'er Craig Simpson. Simpson is playing midget hockey this season with the South Side Athletic Club in Edmonton. In speaking to the 15 year-old defenseman, he has yet to decide if he will play junior or look at U.S. college hockey. Simpson's dad played college at Michigan.

Tonight, Kelowna Rockets fans will get their first good look at Shane McColgan. So will the Spokane Chiefs.

As was the case for most of December, the Rockets will start 2009 with a depleted roster when the Chiefs roll into town for the first time this season. To shore up its roster, Kelowna is bringing in two midget-aged call-ups, one of them being McColgan, the Rockets‘ top pick in the 2008 bantam draft.

Two weeks ago, the Rockets called up McColgan from the Los Angeles Junior Kings for two games, in Red Deer and Edmonton, just prior to the WHL‘s annual Christmas break.

In that short time span, the 5-foot-11 winger from Manhattan Beach, Calif., registered one goal and showcased his offensive flair.

Kelowna‘s other call-up is forward Max Adolph of Saskatoon. Adolph is a six-foot forward from Saskatoon who weighs in at 165 pounds. His midget team is the Saskatoon Contacts, which has produced many WHLers, including former Rocket blue-liner Luke Schenn. Adolph was selected by Kelowna in the fourth round, 69th overall, of the 2007 bantam draft.

“With the addition of Shane and Max,” continued Hamilton, “we‘ll finally have a full lineup after we lost three players to the world juniors. Plus it‘ll give our fans a chance to see two very good future Rockets.”

Kelowna (22-15-0-0) enters tonight‘s game having won three of its last four games but just five of 10 in December.

After Spokane, Kelowna entertains Moose Jaw (12-25-0-1) on Saturday night. McColgan and Adolph are expected to play in both games.
