The Mac's Midget tournament folks unveiled their team lineup today, and for the first time in as long as anyone can remember, it will be an all-western Canadian lineup. All 25 teams are from B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan. No American teams, no European teams. Apparently the Russian team that was so successful last year, Severstal, abruptly pulled out of the tournament last week.

The tournament, held in Calgary from Dec 26 to Jan 1 every year, is widely regarded as one of the best AAA midget tournaments in the world....but you have to wonder if that reputation won't start to take a beating soon if they can't bring in top American and European competition to challenge the top western Canadian teams anymore.

But, for WHL fans, having all 25 teams be from western Canada means there will be more WHL prospects in the tournament than ever before. So without further ado, here's who WHL fans can expect to see in this year's tournament:

It's a pretty good lineup.....18 of the 22 WHL first-round bantam picks in 2008 will be there. Only Brandon's (Klarc Wilson, with Edmonton Knights of Columbus, not invited), Edmonton's (Michael St. Croix, from Manitoba), Kelowna's (Shane McColgan, from California), and Kootenay's (Brendan Hurley, with Fort Saskatchewan, not invited) are not there from the 2008 first round class. One 2007 first round pick (Lethbridge's Mark Reners) is there also.

14 of the 2008 2nd rounders are there as well, so that's 32 of the top 44 picks from last year's bantam draft, all in one tournament and going head-to-head. There's going to be a lot of future WHL stars from that group.

Best team to watch if you want to see WHL prospects? Probably the Sherwood Park Kings, who are in first place in the Alberta Midget league and have four 2008 first rounders on their team.

The Macs website is here: www.macstournament.ab.ca for anyone who wants to follow the tournament....I expect to get out to my usual 5-10 games and may have notes on the tournament here on the blog as it progresses as well....

Prospects in the tournament by WHL affiliation:

Saskatoon: 12
Prince George, Vancouver: 11
Medicine Hat: 10
Edmonton, Everett, Moose Jaw, Red Deer, Regina, Tri-City: 9
Kelowna, Portland, Spokane: 8
Calgary, Chilliwack, Kamloops, Kootenay: 7
Prince Albert, Seattle, Swift Current: 6
Lethbridge: 5
Brandon: 2
