The Canada West Universities Athletic Association and the Western Hockey League are pleased to announce that goaltender Scott Bowles of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns has been named the Canada West Hockey - HUSKY WHL Graduate of the Month for November 2008.

BOWLES, a 22-year-old sophomore goaltender from Penticton, British Columbia, becomes the second winner of the award in 2008-09 joining freshman forward Steven DaSilva of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, who won the award in October.

BOWLES was named the Canada West Hockey – HUSKY WHL Graduate of the Month for November in the closest balloting in the award’s history that saw a tie breaker used to determine the winner. The 5’11:, 176 pound Science student tied for first in the voting with fourth-year senior Aaron Sorochan of the University of Alberta Golden Bears as both goaltenders earned 20 points in the balloting conducted by the seven Canada West Hockey coaches (NOTE: A coach cannot vote for the player from his own team.) BOWLES won the tie breaker with three first place votes to Sorochan’s two first place votes. It is the 10th time that a member of the Pronghorns has won the award since the award was inaugurated in 1989-90.

Now in its 20th season, the Canada West Hockey’s HUSKY WHL Graduate of the Month Award is presented monthly to a graduate of the Western Hockey League who is playing on one of the seven teams in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association. Each monthly winner, between October and March, receives a cheque for $500.00 from the WHL to go towards the cost of his education and a gift from HUSKY.

Canadian intercollegiate hockey is a quality option for players who wish to combine both hockey and education. A total of 105 WHL grads are members of Canada West Hockey’s seven teams in 2008-09. CIS hockey in general, and Canada West Hockey in particular, has allowed these players to further their hockey careers as well as their education at some of Canada’s finest academic institutions.

The former Prince George Cougar played all nine of Lethbridge’s games in November, compiling a 6-3-0 record with a 2.70 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage and one shutout. After starting the season with three consecutive losses form November 1st to 8th, including a 9-1 loss to the number one ranked Alberta Golden Bears, BOWLES and the Pronghorns finished the month with six consecutive victories.

The winning streak, which saw the Pronghorns go 6-0-0 from November 14th to 29th, is the longest by a Lethbridge team since the 1993-94 season when the Pronghorns compiled a team record seven game winning streak from October 30 to November 19, 1993. Lethbridge’s current winning streak moved the Pronghorns into the CIS Top Ten for the first time since the 2002-03 season as they were ranked 10th in the national poll on December 2nd.
.
BOWLES began the winning streak with 2-1 and 4-3 victories in a home-and-home series versus the University of Calgary Dinos on November 14th and 15th. He then backstopped the Pronghorns to a sweep of the University of Manitoba Bisons on November 21st and 22nd, winning 3-2 in a shootout and 3-1. In the shootout victory BOWLES stopped 30 of 32 shots in regulation and then denied the Bisons on both of their shootout attempts for the win.

The month concluded with a second series sweep of their provincial rivals from Calgary as Lethbridge skated to a 4-3 overtime win and a 2-0 victory over the Dinos on November 28th and 29th. The second-year goaltender made 32 saves in leading the Pronghorns to the overtime win in the series opener and then made 27 more saves in a 2-0 win in the second game to secure Lethbridge’s third consecutive series sweep.

The shutout was the first of the season by BOWLES and the second of his career. With the two shutouts, BOWLES established a Lethbridge team record for most career shutouts.

As Canada West Hockey breaks for final exams and the Christmas holidays, BOWLES finishes the first half of the season with a 10-6-0 record, a 3.15 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. His 10 wins leads the conference.

BOWLES played three seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Prince George Cougars and Calgary Hitmen from 2003-04 to 2006-07.

Other nominees for the Canada West Hockey - HUSKY WHL Graduate of the Month award for November were goaltenders Aaron Sorochan of the University of Alberta Golden Bears (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and Gerry Festa of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (Red Deer Rebels) and forward Jared Walker of the University of Manitoba Bisons (Prince George Cougars).

“HUSKY, proud sponsor of the WHL Education Program and the Canada West Hockey – WHL Graduate of the Month.”

Good for Scott. Great to see all these WHLers take advantage of the scholarships. And good to see 2 Cougars tenders win awards this season.

Good for Scott! He got some cash out of it too.

I might be off on this one but I think Sorochan will be playing in China the next time that the UofL and UofA meet. If so, Bowles and Cyr will be opposite each other for those games.
