Listened to this one and I couldn't help wonder why the boys are having such a tough time finishing around the net these days. It feels like their battle is on simmer and not boil and that they are trying too hard to make low percentage pretty plays. The boys will need to get some greasy goals in Kelowna and cannot give the Rockets the same kinds of odd-man rush chances that the Giants gifted the Bruins tonight.

I'm not sure the numbers, but from the sounds of it the boys were sloppy and turning over the puck in bad areas having to hustle back to make up for their errors. The good thing is that the Giants have great back-checking instincts and drive, but there's no need to make it easy for the other guys at any point in a game.

That said it sounded like Lucas Gore was excellent, but he did give up more than a few juicy rebounds that the boys just did not hustle down and that's the reason they lost the game in Seattle, losing puck battles and not chasing down loose pucks. They'll need to do that versus the Rockets.

here's how I heard it:

The Giants were very lucky to come out with the win tonight, as they dominated most of the play, but failed to find their finish with the majority of their chances. The Giants had all of the great scoring chances in the first, but were down 1-0 after one. Bruins goalie Lucas Gore was a big reason for the score. He held the Giants off the score sheet as much as he could and kept his team in the game, but didn’t get much help from his boys. Tyson Sexsmith floated through two periods, allowing a goal on his first three shots, before having to make some very good stops in the final frame to keep his team ahead. The zebras let a lot go and then called ticky-tack crap while ignoring the big stuff. Minimal penalties were called on the night, but the refs allowed quite a lot to slide by the wayside. It took a PP for the Giants to solve Gore. They scored two PP goals in the second. The Giants were 2 for 3 on the PP and it was the difference in the game. Casey Pierro-Zabotel had 1G and 1A on the night. Both Craig Schira and Todd Kennedy were taking the body hard.

Chilliwack opened the scoring late in the first after weathering wave after wave of Giants pressure. Kevin Sundher got some open ice and ripped the puck past Sexsmith. Brent Regner threaded a puck through traffic on the PP, beating Gore at 12:28 of the second. CPZ got what proved to be the game-winning goal with 40 seconds left in the middle frame, taking a nice feed from Kane and putting it past Gore with a wicked one-time shot. The Bruins stepped up their game in the third pressing the G-Men in their own zone, and causing the home squad to scramble far more than they like to do. Thankfully the Bruins lacked the same kind of finish with which the Giants were struggling and failed to tickle the twine. Credit Sexy for holding his team in there, but the Giants made the game far closer than it should have been, not bringing the battle and not fighting for loose pucks, of which there were several, in front of Gore. The Giants need to bury teams like Chilliwack when they get the chance and stop trying to be so cute with the puck and get what Don Hay calls the greasy goals.

Giants went 2 for 3 on the PP, while holding the Bruins to 0 for 4. They out shot the visitors 41-18, with the Bruins getting 9 (fully half of their shot total) of those in the third period. Kane almost got his head taken off with a dangerous and deliberate high hit in the game, but it was Kane who got tagged for roughing when he retaliated. As I said before the zebras let a lot of big stuff go by the wayside and it was pretty piss poor. Schira wiped out Blair Wentworth with a clean huge open ice hit in the third which caused Wentworth’s helmet to sail about ten feet. Craig Cunningham was all over the ice and unfortunate not to get a goal as he made some nice moves at times to get good chances. The Giants have a day off before taking on the Kelowna Rockets at Prospera Place on Friday. Kelowna has had a bit of a surge of late and are saying they are ready for the Giants visit. Let’s hope the Giants use that information to motivate them and try to get the win first and pretty plays second. The puck drops at 7:00pm PST.

Three Stars

1) Lucas Gore
