With 10 games to go in the regular season, second-year forward Corey Tyrell has left the Prince George Cougars and will be returning to his family’s home in Airdrie, Alta.

The Citizen has learned that Tyrell, the younger brother of former team captain Dana, informed the team of his decision after Friday night’s 3-2 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Corey Tyrell, 18, played in 70 games in his rookie season with five goals and nine points. This season, injuries limited him to 39 games and Tyrell had four goals and one assist, along with four penalty minutes.

Dana Tyrell was a drafted player out of bantam who went on to become a second-round NHL draft choice, signing a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning just before Christmas. Dana Tyrell made the national junior team but blew out his knee in a Team Canada exhibition game and had surgery that ended his season.

A five-foot-10, 180-pound winger, Corey Tyrell made the team as a walk-on, unlisted player in the fall of 2007. All four of his goals this season, and all of his points, had been scored after the Christmas break.
