WHOOMPA!

The Giants shut out the Tips for the third time in four games. Tucker has two and Sexsmith one SO. The only Giants loss to the Tips came when Beatch was still in their line-up and the Silvertips won in a shoot-out at the Coliseum.

Not much to say. The Giants showed up. The Tips with a young line-up and couple of key injuries couldn't keep up. Nunn had a hat trick, which if I am not mistaken is his first trick as a Giant. Kane was all over the ice. Wright had a good night, showing flashes recently of what we saw earlier in the year. Cunningham continues to impress, he shows up every game with his workboots ready to do what it takes to get his team the win. This is a player to watch come playoff time.

here's how I heard it:

Giants Stomp Silvertips
Vancouver 8 Everett 0

Don Robinson

Tyson Sexsmith got the 26th shut out of his regular season career, making it an even 30 when you add in his playoff shut-outs, turning away 29 shots for the goose-egg. Garry Nunn got a hat-trick, Adam Basford put in two himself with Craig Cunningham gutting out another couple of goals. James Wright made strides and got a goal as well. The Giants pretty much dominated this game from pole to pole. The Tips showed up for a bit in the first, but as soon as the Giants scored the ice began its inexorable tilt toward to the Silvertip net. Nunn spent the night capitalising on Kane’s rebounds, getting to the loose pucks before most players knew they were loose. He and Kane combined for a goal at 5:22 of the first. Then Nunn, Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Kane put the Giants up by two on the PP late in the first. Craig Cunningham put away a short-handed goal at 6:02 of the second. Cunningham scored another about three minutes later off of a great feed from Bronson Maschmeyer, who is making the most of his ice-time with Blum out for another couple of weeks. Wright rounded out the scoring in the second off of a nice set-up by rookie JT Barnett.

Nunn notched his hat-trick goal just past the mid-way mark in the third. Basford found the twine just over a minute later and then finished off the scoring for the G-Men by being in the right place. Andrej Kudrna had a good night tonight and was unlucky not to get awarded for the goal which was Basford’s second of the night. Kudrna’s great extra effort taking the shot from his belly went in off of Basford and in behind Kent Simpson who came into the game after the Giants 5th goal, to replace Thomas Heemskerk. Ref Pat Smith kept the infraction calls balanced, for good or bad. The Giants went 1 for 5 on PP, scoring a SHG as well, while holding the Tips to 0 for 4. The Vancouver squad out-shot Everett 49-29, pretty much dominating at all ends of the ice in the game. The Tips did not battle past the first period and spent most the time trying to control the damage. Everett has a young team that is going through growing pains right now and have a couple of their players out of the line-up due to injury.

The Giants have three in three this weekend, versus a couple of struggling teams and they will have to make sure they take care of their own end of the ice first and not to take any of these games lightly. The games represent the games in hand they have versus Calgary in the race for top spot in the Dub and they need to win all of them to keep pace. A Friday game against Chilliwack at the Coliseum, another game in Everett on Saturday and a game in Chilliwack on Sunday. Expect to see Jamie Tucker get the start in Everett on Saturday. The Giants have now shut-out the Tips three times this season in four games, two for Tucker and one for Sexsmith. The only win versus the G-Men was a shoot-out win in October. The puck drops at the Coliseum for the Giants last home game versus the Chilliwack Bruins this season at 7:30pm.
