GRABNER GETS THE CALL

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that right wing Michael Grabner has been recalled from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

Grabner, 21, has appeared in 47 games with Manitoba this season, posting 33 points (21-12-33). He ranks tied for first on the team in goals scored (21) and sixth on the team in points (33). The Moose are currently in first place in the AHL.

The Villach, Austria native was also asked to serve on Austria in the Olympic Qualifying tournament, played from February 5-8, 2009. Grabner appeared in three games where he led his team in scoring with five goals.

The 6’1”, 177 lbs. forward was originally drafted by Vancouver in the first round, 14th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Forward Darcy Hordichuk will rejoin the team at practice today. Hordichuk returned home during the team’s cross-country road trip to be with his wife for the birth of their first child, a son.

Jannik Hansen and Pavol Demitra both sustained fractured fingers on the road trip. Hansen was injured during the February 19th game in Ottawa and is expected to be out 3-4 weeks. Demitra suffered the fracture in Tuesday’s game against Montreal. He is being evaluated by doctors in Vancouver.

More details to come after practice...

What a change in scenery. Go from the #1 team in the AHL where you are leading goal scoring to a middle of the pack NHL club that with any right combo of wins and losses could punt them out of the playoff picture or keep them in 5th in the West.

If he is up for any length of time I wonder if he will make an appearance and the Austria-Vancouver Club for the Friday night schnitzel and games evening. I bet they would invite him. They had the Austrian WJHC team over when the championships were in Vancouver.

Good for him getting this shot.

actually for being such a soft one-dimensional player in the Dub, he's really worked hard and become a much more complete player in the A.. good to see him get this chance.

Hopefully Raymond is getting sent down

Well that was short lived. 7hrs.

He practiced with the team today and then they found out that Demitra is good to go so he went back onto the plane to Winterpeg. There is some talk that sets a record for shortest call up ever.

That's definitely gotta be disappointing for Grabner, but he'll get his shot at some point.

I appreciate that AV recognizes that he's a scorer and a skill player and is not just throwing him int the line-up with no place to actually shine.

Putting Grabs on any sort of grind line would be a big waste.

If the 'Nucks didn't sign Sundin, would Grabner have finished out the year in Vancouver?

What a weird scenario that brings up. Alot of people compare Grabner to the Leafs' Tlusty, the team that Sundin played for in the past. Sundin's vacancy makes Tlusty an offensive possiblity for the Leafs, but his arrival in Vancouver could mean that Grabner doesn't get a shot as soon. Does that mean that in a round-about way, Tlusty takes Grabner's spot in the NHL and silences all of the debates?

(Merely a joking rant, of course)

Sundin is probably only here for the rest of this season (no way they can afford the twins and Mats -- and more and more it seems like they are going to sign the twins.. I personally think its a bad idea, because they do not show up in the post-season), so Grabs will have to wait another year, but I think he'll get a good shot at being a contributing winger then.

That said the Canucks are one of the worst scouting teams in the league, and following closely behind is their player development, which in the past has been pretty much non-existent, but is supposed to improve from now on. So the spin goes.

there's a bit of Canucks politics for you ;)
