Did Dustin Slade get a raw deal from the Pats? Was he well liked by the Pats fans?

I'd like to hear some inside information on that whole scenario as well. Here's an article from last season when troubles already began.

League comes down on Slade

The court showed no mercy on a remorseful Dustin Slade.
The Regina Pats outstanding rookie goaltender was suspended by the WHL on Monday for four games -- one of which has already been served.

Slade won't be eligible to return until Game 6 of Regina's first-round playoff against the Moose Jaw Warriors, provided the series lasts that long. Moose Jaw leads the best-of-seven matchup 2-0, with Game 3 set for tonight at the Agridome.

"The last couple of days have been mentally and emotionally scarring," offered Slade, who has been largely secluded from the team for the past three days. "It's obviously something I've thought about a lot. What I did was wrong. On a personal level, sure, it hurts, but I'm more worried about the team.

"I feel like I let down a lot of people who supported me," he added. "All I can do is learn from it and not let it happen again."

Slade was penalized for his actions in Game 1, which the Pats lost 3-0 on Friday at the Crushed Can. With 1:45 remaining in the contest, Slade left his crease and delivered a blow to the head of Moose Jaw's Cam Lilley, who was tangled up on the ice with Pats defenceman Andrew de Sousa.

The incident started a melee and resulted in Slade being handed a match penalty. He was also slapped with a gross misconduct for making physical contact with a fan while being escorted to the dressing room. The fan had threatened to press charges but has apparently reconsidered.

"It's probably a fair suspension," said Pats GM Brent Parker. "When I say it's disappointing I'm speaking more to the entire incident. You never like losing your starting goaltender but he brought it upon himself. You serve the penalty and you move on."

Parker said the incident shouldn't affect Slade's long-term status with the team. The 17-year-old netminder became an instant fan favourite when he was acquired on Jan. 7 from the Brandon Wheat Kings.

"These are 17-, 18-year-old kids and they make mistakes," Parker added. "If we severed all ties with every kid that made a mistake we wouldn't have a league. We have to help make them better as a person and as a player. In that respect, (the incident) hasn't affected anything."

The length of the suspension was determined by Slade's actions on the ice, as well as his altercation with the fan and his status as a repeat offender. Slade received a one-game suspension on Feb. 2 when he delivered a blocker to the head of Moose Jaw's Dustin Boyd.

"We know there's a lot more at stake for the teams at this present time (the playoffs)," said WHL vice-president Richard Doerksen. "Yet, we've always said we're trying to protect the players in our league. Certainly if a player is a repeat offender, that does come into consideration."

Slade made his case on Monday in a conversation with league officials. He humbly took responsibility for his actions and expressed regret that the incident occurred.

"You live with the decisions you make," Slade continued. "Sometimes the decisions you make aren't exactly the smartest ones. It was definitely selfish of me to lose my cool.

"It's something I'll learn from and it has totally changed my mindset. I can't justify what I did. All I can do is hopefully come back and try to take my team further next year -- if not this year. I really feel like we have something special on this team. I hope I'm here for a long time."

Slade added he's not the hot-head some people have tried to make him out to be. His attack on Lilley was a response to an earlier slash to the back of the head/neck area and the incident with the fan, who may or may not have been intoxicated, was a knee-jerk reaction to someone who was trying to get in his face.

"I wouldn't just lose it for no reason," he said. "I didn't do everything because I was crazy or out of control. Obviously there was something that triggered me to go off. I have to learn to control that."

Yeah, I read the ones from the Pats site. But not the one you put up on your reply. Thanks.

Most all liked him...a few didn't. He was one of the reasons to go watch the Pats, because you would never know what he might do or if he'd have a great game. Sucks that he's gone now.

Yeah, most people liked him. He was always entertaining, and he always worked hard. He's so intense, and gets so into it, he was fun to watch, unlike a lot of guys have been this season. Definately a good reason to go to the games.

Look at it this way, he's been gone over a month and he is still making waves. I was actually a little surprised though, at the support he got with this whole Parker deal, even from a lot of people who really don't like him.

I read in the calgary sun awhile back that Kision had inquired about Slade. At the deadline most of us Hitmen fans were expecting us to get one of 2 goalies. We all thought it was going to be Moir or Slade, but we ended up with Pogge. Time will only tell if Kisio brought in the right goaltender.

Slade is unstable in the nets all over the place. Plus he hurts his team taking selfish pentalies.
