Brandon, Manitoba -- Now that the 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Rimouski has come and gone, the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Keystone Centre and the City of Brandon are on the clock as preparations continue for the 2010 Championship, to be played at Westman Place next May.

Members of the 2010 MasterCard Memoiral Cup Host Committee returned from Rimouski this weekend and according to Chairman Jeff Cristall it was a tremendous learning experience for everyone involved.

“We're going to be able to put on an absolutely amazing MasterCard Memorial Cup experience for everyone,“ Cristall told Luber's Lounge. “Given the differences between what occurs here (in Rimouski) and the challenges they have with buildings being in different places, we're going to be able to let the Keystone Centre shine in the way that the Keystone Centre shines so often when these types of events come to town.“

The host committee is expected to meet shortly to review what was done in Rimouski this year and begin formulating plans for what promises to be one of, if not the biggest sporting event to ever hit western Manitoba.

“It's exciting to come back and you've got lots of ideas and you're just ready to go,“ Event Manager Lois MacDonald recently told the Brandon Sun. “I think that once we sit down, it's going to give us a great opportunity to start gelling on exactly what the MasterCard Memorial Cup in 2010 is going to look like.“
Cristall says now that the local host committee is on the clock, the real work begins.

“We'll be finalizing our calendar because that's one of the first things we need to do is to say here's what we're doing,“ he says. “We're not making any significant changes to the draft as a result of what we saw (in Rimouski), at least we don't expect to be. We're going to fill in a couple of holes, a couple of positions we didn't realize were going to be as extensive as they are that we're going to need people in charge of areas that we thought would get taken care of within areas.“

It's expected the event will require approximately six hundred volunteers and could generate about $13 million in economic activity for the city and surrounding area.
Those that have signed up to volunteer should be contacted by the many committees sometime this summer. Those that haven't signed up can do so by visiting the official website of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup, located at www.mastercardmemorialcup.com/2010 .

Meanwhile, Wheat Kings' season ticket holders have until Friday, June 5th to renew their package for 2009-2010, which guarantees them their seat for next year's Championship, to be held May 14-23rd.
