SPORTS: Tri-City Americans coach resigns
By Annie Fowler, Herald staff writer
The winningest coach in Tri-City Americans history has coached his last game at Toyota Center.

Don Nachbaur, who spent six seasons behind the bench and led the Americans to back-to-back U.S. Division titles, resigned Thursday night.

“Tri-Cities has been great for my career,” said Nachbaur, who would not confirm his new job until later today. “It gave me a chance for my kids to grow up in a fantastic city where we all made good friends. It will be hard to leave. That’s the really hard part of the whole situation, but I have had a professional situation come up that made it difficult.”

Nachbaur, 50, became the 18th head coach of the Americans on June 16, 2003, when he replaced Shaun Clouston. Nachbaur, who also coached the Seattle Thunderbirds, was the longest tenured coach in Americans history and finished his six-year run 235-156-14-9 — with 18 ties — and U.S. Division titles in 2008 and 2009.
