When last season ended, the Vancouver Giants were looking at a rather depleted defence before another season arrived. But, all of a sudden, the Giants’ blue-line brigade is looking rather stellar. Gone from the Giants’ season-ending roster are Mike Berube and Craig Schira, both of whom were 20-year-olds, Jonathan Blum, who will play in the Nashville Predators’ organization, Nick Ross, who is ticketed for the Phoenix Coyotes’ organization, and Brent Regner, who will be in the Columbus Blue Jackets’ organization.

But the season wasn’t long over before Vancouver GM Scott Bonner acquired a couple of WHL veterans, getting D Matt Strong, 19, from the Chilliwack Bruins for a 2010 eight-round bantam pick and D Ryan Funk, 20, from the Saskatoon Blades for a 2009 fifth-rounder.

Then the Giants landed David Musil, 16, in a swap with the Kootenay Ice, giving up first- and fifth-round picks in exchange.

And now D Kevin Connauton has told the Vancouver Province’s Steve Ewen that, yes, he is leaving Western Michigan U to play for the Giants. Connauton, 19, was a third-round pick by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL’s 2009 draft. Ewen writes that Connauton “said that the Canucks agreed that he would progress better in the WHL than in college”. Connauton is said to be a strong skater with terrific offensive skills. And, just like that, the Giants’ defence looks like it may not miss a beat.

don't forget first round pick Zach Hodder.. who is supposed to be the real deal.. a 16 year old that has a real chance to make the team

Connauton is 6'2" 205 .. some much needed size -- let's hope he plays big as well

coming out of camp (last couple of days -- still games tonight and tomorrow night at the Ladner Leisure Centre -- its good hockey) the D is looking far deeper than we expected, great work by Bonner picking up some depth and making some deals to get some real contributers. Fortunate to have Kevin Connauton inked and playing for us this year, but the research done on the Musil kid was incredible (the Giants were the ones who actually realized that he was not a euro, but Canadian born and placed him on their PPL -- many teams whined that it was unfair and the league gifted Musil to Kootenay in a lottery that really should never have been -- undaunted the Giants made the deal to get Musil here a 16 year old monster, losing a first and fifth rounder in the process -- Musil's family wanted him to play in Vancouver close to his family -- so Kootenay wasn't really going to keep him regardless) and Hodder, plus a few other solid D-men -- makes our blue-line actually formidable and thankfully bigger in a lot of cases.

btw Connauton plays big, and so does Musil, Hodder brings a very mature balanced game for his age (still a learning curve, but he's looking good so far).. and OA D Ryan Funk who has been injured during camp, but helping out in practice
