PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. -- The Prince George Cougars' audience is about to get a lot bigger.

The WHL team's training camp, which opened Friday, will be filmed for a reality show tentatively titled 'The Rookies' that will air in six half-hour segments on Rogers Sportsnet in March.

Montreal-based Rat Films will follow the team at the camp, on a road trip to Everett, Wash., and for the Cougars' home opener Sept. 18 against the Spokane Chiefs.

Alex Taillon of Rat Films said Prince George is a perfect setting for the series.

"We're a bunch of people from Montreal who were looking at the map for places we could go, and from our perspective Prince George has a lot of interesting things going on," said Taillon, who was behind a French-language series called 'Les Recruits' that focused on the Chicoutimi Sagueneens and aired on French sports network RDS.

"It's not a major centre like Vancouver or Toronto, or a suburb of one of those big places. We did it first in French in Chicoutimi, and that community is a town that is further away and they really were into their team there.

"We're hoping to find that here, that community spirit and pride."

Original plans to film 'The Rookies' in Guelph, Ont., and Brandon, Man., hit snags, but the Cougars were happy to fill in. Rat Films will have mics on players, cameras in the dressing room and may even wind up in the coach's office to show the moment when a player is let go.
