Colin Long is one step closer to rejoining the Kelowna Rockets.

Last season‘s captain and scoring leader was assigned by the NHL‘s Phoenix Coyotes to their AHL-affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, on Sunday. Phoenix shares its farm team with the Anaheim Ducks, and also has an affiliation with the ECHL in Las Vegas.

If he doesn‘t stick with San Antonio, odds are Long, who has one season of junior eligibility left, will find himself back in the Okanagan with Kelowna.

Still without an entry-level contract from the Coyotes, Long was selected by Phoenix in the fourth round (99th overall) of the 2008 draft.

The 20-year-old from Santa Ana, Calif., captained the Rockets to a WHL title and Memorial Cup final appearance last season. He compiled 33 goals and 91 points in 68 regular-season contests, then added four goals and 16 points during Kelowna‘s playoff run.

Long was one of 15 players demoted by Phoenix on Sunday. Joining him on the bus to San Antonio were Justin Bernhardt and Mitch Fritz.
