pretty boring game. a good fight. some decent work and checking , but over-all the boys didn't show up for the most part and didn't battle and this team is simply not talented enough to put forth a lack-lustre game like that and succeed. Tucker did all he could to keep his team in the game, but their production was severely lacking. Adam Brown did not have to be good tonight, the Giants just made him look good and that cannot happen. This team has to be all about the effort every shift, every night and tonight it wasn't there. Hopefully they decide to show up against the Tigers tomorrow.

Rockets Trim Giants
Vancouver 1 Kelowna 2

The Rockets were hoping to win one back after dropping their home opener to the Giants 6-5 and they did not go away disappointed. They brought a very disciplined close checking game to the arena, got the early lead in the first and after allowing a goal against in the second bounced back in the third scoring their second PP goal of the game. The Giants lacked battle and second effort for most of the night, were awful in the face-off circle and pretty much barely showed up to this one. A late fight was the only real thing to enliven the home crowd as they watched their team get beat.

The Giants came out early forechecking well and bringing the body. Unfortunately this only lasted a few minutes before they allowed the stifling checking of the Rockets to suck their energy from them. Lucas Bloodoff opened the scoring late in the first, putting home a loose puck in the crease. Jamie Tucker who had a solid night back-stopping needed some offense from his team and better support around his net. Tucker made a good stop dropping the rebound just in front of him as goalies are taught to do, but his team failed to tie up the Rocket’s stick while killing a penalty and the puck found the back of the net. The reffing was fairly inconsistent, calling ticky-tack crap early on and then putting the whistles away when similar infractions took place late in the game. Penalty trouble in the first killed the Giants early momentum, bringing the game to a grinding halt for both players and fans.

The Giants had a better second, managing more than 3 shots, as they had done in the first period, and getting a bit of flow going. The Rockets still made it tough for the home team to get a good rhythm going in the game, but their extra effort resulted in a goal, that Adam Brown might want back. A nice breakout pass from Ryan Funk to Brendan Gallagher broke free their offense as Gally dished the puck to James Henry. Henry cut in from the right side, settled the puck and ripped a wrister high on Brown. Brown caught a piece of the puck with his glove, but not enough as the rubber found the twine. The goal came late in the second and some mechanical errors with one of the bench doors, the visitors bench and a very consistent problem at the Coliseum which needs to be addressed, killed any small momentum gained from the goal - as everyone sat around waiting for the problem to be solved.

The Rockets came back in the third, plying their very effective trade. They won a lot of face-offs, were beating Giants to the puck and winning puck battles. They were consistently challenging the points forcing the Giants to make poor plays and shoot into coverage. Basically they were out working the home team badly at pretty much every facet of the game. Tucker had to turn away a few breakaways and several defensive breakdowns to hold his team in the game, but sadly they were not ready to take that gift and run with it. The Rockets notched what proved to be the game-winner mid-third, when the Giants failed to challenge their point and allowed uncontested shots through traffic. Shane McColgan found the twine with an unchallenged point shot. A few minutes later McColgan took a bit of a gutless poke at Kevin Connauton and probably wishes he hadn’t as Connauton fed him a flurry of fists until McColgan finally collapsed under the onslaught. It wasn’t even close and pretty much the only thing the home crowd could cheer for on this listless night.

The Giants were out shot and managed a mere 20 shots to 30 on the night, a very rare stat for the G-Men at home. 3 in the first, 12 in the second and a paltry 5 in the third – not impressive in the least. Credit the Rockets for keeping the Giants at bay, but the home squad needed a much better effort tonight, as they lost a game they should have lost due to a lack of effort. Hay will not be pleased. The Giants special teams were awful as they squandered all of the their PPs with no traffic going to the net and taking well-covered point shots into skates. Their normally solid penalty kill was pretty poor as they allowed big lanes and did not force the play at the points, giving the Rockets free shots from the blue-line. The Giants were 0 for 4 on the PP, while the Rockets went 2 for 6.

Jamie Tucker was pretty solid tonight and had to be. A good bounce back game after being pulled from the Giants last tilt. James Henry was the best Giant tonight in my mind, was the only player who could seem to win a face-off, and was dangerous at both ends of the ice. The Giants have to put that one behind them as the Tigers are in town tomorrow (Saturday) night. They will need a hell of a lot better effort and return to their strong defensive game, to shut down the boys from Medicine Hat. They’ll need to be flashy to live up to Vegas Night at the Coliseum as well. Puck drops at 7:00pm PDT.

Three Stars

1. Jamie Tucker
2. Brandon McMillan
3. Shane McColgan
